One of the unfortunate side effects of the Christmas season is that more suicides occur. While talking with the family of an officer who committed suicide, the issue of a person committing suicide not being able to go to heaven came up. It was a remarkable coincidence that my pastor had given a sermon that included that very subject the previous week. I advised the grieving aunt that everything I had read in the bible and my pastor said that committing suicide does not bar a person from going to heaven. I know this is a hard subject to discuss and that it emotionally drains people but felt directed to post it. There are other more knowledgeable people on this forum but I wanted to post this in case it might help somebody else. Thanks.

My husband's grandfather was found to be terminally ill. In order to avoid suffering and becoming a burden on his family. He took his own life. The priest ruled that he was mentallyh and emotionaly distraught because of his illness and his concern for his family and was, therefore, not responsible for what he did.

RE: Suicide
It's not up to the priest ......
Bottom line, if he trusted in the redemptive work of Christ on Calvary and the resurrection 3 days later, and just that, he is in Heaven ....... the thought of one commiting suicide not being able to get into Heaven is wicked church dogma .... not Bible doctrine ...

My personal opinion is mostpeople who take their own lives are mentally unstable, and I don't think the mentally unstable will be held accountable for their actions. It's just an opinion--I could be way off here.
FWIW, I don't have any immediate family who's taken their own life, so I'm not looking for an excuse.

Well, first of all I don't usually post much here but I know first hand what a terrible thing suicide can be. It was just two weeks ago that a friend of mine commmited suicide. He was suffering through a bout of depression. It was 11 years ago that my youngest brother chose to kill himself over a marriage gone sour. A permanent solution for a temporary problem you might say. He left work, came to my house, used my gun, sit down in my shower and put a bullet through his head. I know that sounds cold but that's exactly what happened. I've layed in my bed awake many nights trying to understand what made him come to do this. He must have been in so much pain, so much hurting going on inside over not being with his kids, that he just couldn't overcome it and he had a complete mental breakdown. Knowing my brother, I'm sure he must have prayed a lot before pulling the trigger. I guess if I had walked in his shoes, I might be able to understand it a little better. Will God punish him for making such a fatal decision? I think people make fatal decisions all the time by eating foods that are bad for them or by taking unnecessary risk in their automobiles? These actions could be considered suicidal but most people probably never think of them as such.

Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 1Cr 3:17
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
Sorry ..... I don't know if you are paraphrasing, but it reads like this, 1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
ICorinthians 3:17 doesn't even say what you quoted

I can understand why some do it. I've never been this low in my life, and I've thought about it a few times this last three weeks, but as of today I'm still hanging in there. It hard some days and other days it's harder. Hopefully I will come out of this valley stronger than ever before.
I see why some do it! I sure will understand in the future why they do it.
