I posted a fairly long explination to why I'm asking this question, but when I hit "ok" to send the post I got an error. Before typing the entire situation again I want to make sure things are working on my end. At any rate, the question is "how old is the universe". I'll send the full post again soon, but look forward to your replies in the mean time.

Recently, on a trip to D.C., we visited the mesuem of natural history and afterwards my daughter and I had a very serious discussion about evolution vs. creation. Before I go on I'll tell you that she is a college student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and is aChristian who has devoted her life to Christ and all things for her revolve around that devotion. I on the other hand consider myself to be a Christian and have accepted Jesus as my personal savior. I admit however, that I do not have nearly the amount of understanding as I should or that most probably do...certainly my daughter included. That said, duringour next visit she gave me a book that was written by a professor at her university. It's call "unraveling the origins controversy". In the book the writer makes his claimthat the universe is something around 6,000 years old and gives very logical, biblical reasoning for his statement. This simply blew me out ofthe water when I consider all that we are taught about the jurasic period, dinosuars, etc. Those things seemto beproven and point to the world being millions and millions of years old.

If one believes in the 6 day literal creation account in Genesis..the earth is a little over 6000 years..
I believe our time and God's time may be different so when the universe was created ..I have no problem with a long time..However; I believe the creation of man started with Adam and that was about 4004 B.C.
That is exactly what this writer suggests...4004 B.C. However, he does not agree that the universe may be older thanaround 6k years because he states that God's time and ours are exactly the same...a 24 hour day is/was a 24 hour day.

In 2Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. Time is for our benefit, we were given the seasons for signs. We were created on the sixth day, the seventh God rested.
Then also in the OT it said that God made the sun stand still. We can prbably get a close guess as to how old it is but it will never be accurate, and God is eternal so His time and ours will obviously be different.
This question has been discussed before and no minds were changed as far as I could tell. Just to make it official I will state that there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support the accounts in Genesis. On the contrary, all the evidence points to thecreation of the universe as taking place many billions of years ago. The evidence also indicates that the diversity of species has arisen through natural selection, i.e., evolution. This includes man, there being considerable evidence that man and the apes evolved from a commonancestor.
It is perfectly possible to be a committed Christian and accept the scientific facts regarding origins, althoughI'm aware that some folkson this forum do not believe that to be possible. My husband and I both are observant Catholics and fully accepting of the scientific evidence. Of course, some do not accept Catholics as Christians either.

Liberty University's science faculty has no credibility with the mainstream scientific community and has not produced any evidence that would support an age of 6,000 years for the Universe. On the other hand, scientists at leading American universities such as The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cal Tech, Princeton and Harvard, as well as government agencies such as NASA have researched this question extensively using observations from major observatories and space probes. Combining their data from observations with theoretical calculations based on the General Theory of Relativity the general consensus among these respected scientists is that the evidence points to an age of about 13.7 billion years for the Universe. There could be future minor adjustments to this figure since calculating it requires knowledge of the Hubble constant which has to be determined from very difficult observations and is still not known with absolute precision but the best observations have now settled on a very narrow range around 72 km/sec/megaparsec which may be 2-3 percent away from the true value.

Just curious, is it Catholicism that has taught you not to believe?

Just curious, is it your religion that has taught you to be self righteous? BTW, it's not just catholics that believe the same way DLG does regarding science. I agree with her and am Wesleyan methodist.
