Default Stupid question....

[]Um I had a question about certain denominations.

I found out just recently although i am protestant. My church is the church of Scotland which is presbyterian.

I am not sure what that means. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light in simple english as i looked it up and didn't give me the answer i was looking for.

For example, what is the difference between being presbyteriancompared to - baptist, pentecostal, evangelical and methodist? Are they all basically the same?

Baptist, pentecoastal and evangelical aren't popular denominations here mostly just either methodist, presbyterian or catholic.

Sorry im just curious that's all.

Prsebyterians are generally EXTREMELY liberal..They do not beieve in Hell and they do not beleive the Bible to be 100% inspired of God..Thier theology is closest to Baptist as Presbeterians comne from the John Calvin theology which beleive in eternal security .{ Can't lose your salvation}and election..only certain ones will be saved no matter what.

I would be considered a Pentecostal..we believe there must be evidence of a Born Again ..experience { A Holy Life Style} ..Al the other denomnations believe in a real fiery HELL where hypocrites, the ungodly , sinnners and unbeleivers will spend eternity..

Remington GIrl, ....If I were you I'd simply begin reading the New Testament from cover to cover..He will reveal the truth to you through His Word. Don't commit yourself to the teaching of no man until you've read it yourself from Matthew - Revelations.

Sincerely,
Chuck Borden

You know, I was born & raised Catholic, even went to Catholic jr high. But it wasn't until I was in my thirties, & my wife wanted to convert, that I got a real education in my own faith!! This is one area where the Church falls short...we're confirmed in 8th grade, & then its "Seeya, have fun!!" IMO, Catechesis shouldn't stop with Confirmation, but should be ongoing...

RG read it for yourself, sometimes is better than being told by someone what your denomination belief, I find that absurd !
The Presbyterian Church of Scotland beliefs the Bible is 100% Inspired, Don't know where Chuck got that ?

"Chapter 19 - The Authority of the Scriptures"
As we believe and confess the Scriptures of God sufficient to instruct and make perfect the man of God, so do we affirm and avow their authority to be from God, and not to depend on men or angels. We affirm, therefore, that those who say the Scriptures have no other authority save that which they have received from the Kirk are blasphemous against God and injurious to the true Kirk, which always hears and obeys the voice of her own Spouse and Pastor, but takes not upon her to be mistress over the same.

Here is the Presbyterian Church Of Scotland's Creed.

I may have missed something ALex? I didn't know rhier was any difference in the Presbyterian church in SCotland than the popular one we have in the USA..I did attend a Presbyterian one here a few times and investigated..

1. I played with thier musical group..you would have never know thye were Christians ..by te songs they sang or the small talk..

2. I investigated on the web..and I know a Pres.pastor..Big time Calvin..I will say there is a more conservative group { A small group} called the American Presbyterian Church}
I apologize if the Scotland church is totally different

Also..I've read alot of Remington Girl's post and replies in the Off Season..I still believe it would benefit our friend to engulf herself in the Word..A fresh start would be beneficial.

Sincerely,
Chuck7
"To begin with, we are not tied to a doctrine of Biblical inerrancy as are some denominations, and we believe that you can take the Bible seriously as one's authority in matters of faith and practice without holding to a strict doctrine of inerrancy as it is found today. Many of the more conservative evangelical churches insist that the Bible is without error, or at least without error in the original manuscripts that no longer exist. Conservative evangelicals in Europe often find conservatives in this country a strange breed because the doctrine of an inerrancy is not widely held among European evangelicals."
this was a copy and paste from a Pres.minister..

and one more quote before I go to bed..

"For some the Bible is inerrant; for others it is not necessarily factual, but it breathes with the life of God." Presby, minister

Some of the bible words i cannot understand. Thats why i was asking for help from you guys. Seems some are reluctant than others.

Chuck, you've been really helpful. I stopped being religious for a long time. I still believe n all. But i dont attend church.

I never truely knew what my denomination meant. There's so many out there.

The majority in my town attend Linwood parish church which is the church of Scotland. Where i was christened as a baby.

P.S I think our denomination is very old compared to the US. I know alot of denominations there are alot newer and most dont exist here or aren't popular.

Chuck, you've been really helpful. I stopped being religious for a long time. I still believe n all. But i dont attend church. ..smart choice..I was raised Methodist..What I got after 13 years was that Christmas was about a small box of chocolates and Easter was a bout a chocolate bunny..Later in life though I decided to reas my New Testament on my own..When I did that..The Lord opened my mind to th etruth and BROUGHT true beleivers to me..I didn't go looking for them..The Lord brought them to me.

I never truely knew what my denomination meant. There's so many out there.

One thing for sure Remington girl..God has His true worshippers in every city and town..I know when I got serious with God..HE quickly opened the door for me to meet real God fearing saints..and honestly there is not one true denomination..God has HIs people represented in all the Christian denominations..I've honestly found them in Baptist , Catholic, Methodist , Episcopal, Messianic Jews, Lutheran, Oneness , Pentecostal and Independent Home Churches..

Go dloves you girl..I've been real careful in writing these replies because I don't want to offend you in or embarass you in anyway..Jesus is not like that..He is a gentleman..I sincerely hope that you expereince a mighty touch of His grace and love in your life.
Sincerely,
Chuck7

Your not embarrassing me, please dont think that. Heck it takes alot for me to go red in the face

I just wasn't sure the differences in different denominations that was all. But I've decided to get in touch with my religious side again. My papa used to go to church every sunday faithfully whether he was ill or not. I have great respect for him. I know the church of Scotland is a big organisation here but is Scottish presbyterianism popular in the states?
