Folks, just wondering if this subject has ever been kicked around here on the forum. I'm new here so I don't know what has been discussed. Tell me what your opinion is about the Masonic Lodge. And yes, I used to be one but demitted from my home lodge!
I won't pretend that I really know anything about them. All I need to know is that they are a secret society in that there is much they won't tell you until you join. . . .How stupid is that??? . . . .Who in their right mind would join anything that they don't fully understand before joining? I was given the opportunity to become a mason yrs ago when I worked for a paper co. Anybody who was anybody there joined the Masons and it was a given that if you went anywhere in the co you had to be a mason.

I know that they aren't very Catholic friendly, & were instrumental in the oppression the Catholic immigrants were subjected to in the latter part of the 19th century. Other than that, I don't really know much.

Hey so was "Jack the Ripper" really one of you guys???
General requirements
Generally, to be a regular Freemason, a candidate must:[20]
[ul][*]Be a man who comes of his own free will.[*]Believe in a Supreme Being. (The form of which is left to open interpretation by the candidate)[*]Be at least the minimum age (from 18"“25 years old depending on the jurisdiction).[*]Be of good morals, and of good reputation.[*]Be of sound mind and body (Lodges had in the past denied membership to a man because of a physical disability, however, now, if a potential candidate says a disability will not cause problems, it will not be held against him).[*]Be free-born (or "born free", i.e. not born a slave or bondsman).[50] As with the previous, this is entirely an historical holdover, and can be interpreted in the same manner as it is in the context of being entitled to write a will. Some jurisdictions have removed this requirement.[*]Have character references, as well as one or two references from current Masons, depending on jurisdiction. [/ul]
Deviation from one or more of these requirements is generally the barometer of Masonic regularity or irregularity. However, an accepted deviation in some regular jurisdictions is to allow a Lewis (the son of a Mason),[51] to be initiated earlier than the normal minimum age for that jurisdiction, although no earlier than the age of 18.
Some Grand Lodges in the United States have an additional residence requirement, candidates being expected to have lived within the jurisdiction for certain period of time, typically six months.[52]
[edit] Membership and religion
Freemasonry explicitly and openly states that it is neither a religion nor a substitute for one. "There is no separate Masonic God", nor a separate proper name for a deity in any branch of Freemasonry.[53][54]
Regular Freemasonry requires that its candidates believe in a Supreme Being, but the interpretation of the term is subject to the conscience of the candidate. This means that men from a wide range of faiths, including (but not limited to) Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc. can and have become Masons.
All are great responces. Especially Turkey Fife's. This was what I was trying tobring out in the open. And the main reason I demitted from the lodge was because of the wide-spread doctrine that you can be a member of many sects or worship who you please.
I would like to see somemore responces though so keep them coming!!
What's the purpose of a thread purely designed to put a bad rap on Masons?
If you don't want to be a member, simple, don't join.
If you're a member and dissatisfied with the organization, simple, quit.
Does putting a bad rap on Masons make one a better/holier Christian?
By the way, I am not now, never have been, and never will be, a Mason.
But I do respect the acts of charity in which some of the organizations engage.
Amen brother!.....................It's every mans prerogativeto choose his Religion, Denominations and Organizations...Many of us might notlike it, butwho are we to judge?

Cr, wasn't my intension to put a bad rap on the lodge!! I merely ask for opinions. I didn't say they are bad (Masons) only in the fact the reason I demitted was becausethe lodge is not a Christian based organization.
One of Gods commandments states: "there shall be no other gods before me". I happen to be a believing and practicing Christian that believes that the Bible is the inherit word of God. And you're right, I exercised my right of freedom and quit!

So why bring it up? Am I supposed to quit the National Rifle Association because it isn't a Christian organization?
I used to belong to the Lions Club. We would have a prayer at every meeting, but every member I think, belonged to a different faith. So what?
I am sure that there are a whole lot of good, charitable, Christian men in the Masons. Why take jabs at them?
