do you know this guy? Charles E. Fitzgerald, Lakeland, Florida i've been listening to his songs all morning, and they are great! http://www.southerngospelsongs.com/is the site they are on. i got the guitar out and played along with the playback, and found a couple i plan on singing at church. great site for that, as they provide words and music also. just thought i'd ask, since i noticed the city he was from. have a blessed day, and be a blessing to all you meet--Bill

i have an Epiphone Les Paul i use for jamming, an Ibanez Artcore that i leave at the church to play there, an Epi ac/elec AJ, an epi ac., a takamime ac., a Bentley parlor ac., and a Harmony Stella ac. the last 5 are guitars i bought and repaired in one way or another. i'll have another yard sale this summer and get rid of some of the acoustics. i sold 4 last yard sale. most of these i work on are bought off E-Bay at giveaway prices when they need repairs. the Bentley and Stella are just the right size for kids to play, and i may have to save them back for the grandsons- they are starting to show interest in strumming around on them while i accompany them. i am not where i want to be as far as playing, but it works out for me, because most of the songs i sing are not known by our pianist at church, so i just play and let her follow along. i play rhythm, not lead, and am backed up by bass and lead at church. both those guys are GOOD, so they cover my mistakesmaybe some time when i'm down that way, we can meet and jam together. would love to do that, and meet you and your family. wish there was some way we could get a Hunting.net jam session going! that would be something to hear-everyone on here playing together!!

and another I've done in church....Both songs are simple 3 chord songs..so you need to do some picking to keep it from getting boring..words are very clever as Petra is known for that..

chuck-i use a more traditional type of playing-just chording, and place emphasis on the vocals. i leave the finger picking to our lead guitar player-David. i find it hard to concentrate on the words and finger picking at the same time. guess that's the lazy way, but i didn't get into playing to impress anyone. just try to help out the singing part. i tend to sing more contemporary, older gospel songs. i like the newer songs, just don't want to get away from the older ones. i find it easier to relay the message of the song if it is done in a more relaxed, slower tempo than most of the newer songs are done. and our older church members like to hear them. there are several singers in our church, so i let them use the new songs, and i use the older ones. makes for a good balance in the services. every now and then, i'll spring an up tempo, fast and furious one on them to keep from getting into too deep a rut.and my fingers are getting too stiff to really do justice to the finger picking style of playing now. even had to change my way of playing after mashing my left index finger. having trouble making bar chords now, so am having to change fingering some chords. gets interesting at times. some times, there is no other way, so i grit my teeth and bear the pain, but i am using a capo and getting around the harder ones when i can. got the finger caught between the blade and 3 pt. hitch on my tractor last year, and the joints are rather stiff now. but, with the Lords help, i'm making do. got a book that shows alternate chording, so i have to do some looking at times. makes it hard for anyone to follow my lead at the jam sessions. will go play tonite for 2 or 3 hours. play with some guys that have been playing for 50 yrs or more (most played with pro bands, one with Johnny Cash). i tell them that i don't want to know everything they know about guitar playing, just want to know all they have forgotten

BIll,
I was intriqued with music ever since I was 4..I used to play along with Chuck Berry's Jonny B Good at age 4 on a broom. At age 17 I bought a beginner book by Mel Bay and self taught myself.During the early 70s I loved rock and roll and always wished I could play lead like Lynard Skynard , Led Zepplin etc.etc..
My next door neighbors also made records .They played bluegrass. I used to sit and watch for hours one fellow named George Colson play the guitar with lightning speed. I wanted to do that..so I practiced for 35 years and here I am..
I do get convicted though when I play..David tells us to play "Skillfully unto the Lord." You are right ..thereare basically 2 styles..1 to show off 2. to honestly worship the Lord.
There may be a 3rd..to enjoy yourself..I mean to get good you need to practice scales etc..and to get the various chord inversions down the neck. There are at least 15 different ways of getting every chord...I appreciate the conversation Bill..there is only one problem..now you got me thinking about going to the guitar store..and I'm serious.Last month I sold a bottom of the line Martin to upgrade..you got my itch back..
God bless,
C7
