I'm a Christian, I love the Lord, and I am saved. I know sin is human nature and everyone does it. However, I wonder about profanity. I completely understand that it is unacceptable to use the Lord's name in vein. But what about the "f" word, the "s" word, and so on? Those words aren't condemned in the Bible. Regardless, I really limit my use of them, but they do pop out sometimes like when I get mad.
I know it's been said on here, I think by TheRev, that we should not manipulate and try to interpret the Bible just so it can accomodate our needs or justify our personal sins. I agree with this wholeheartedly, but this is just one of those things I think about from time to time, and can't quite figure it out on my own. I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks y'all, God bless.

[ol][*][26] If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
[/ol]
I know how you feel. I had a slip of the Tongue tonight at a Basketball Game.
Any good I ever did for the Lord was Un-Done. I believe this VS and try to Briddle my Tongue its hard! I did so good for so long and as I get older I am worse at controling anything. YOU CAN DO IT, IFYOU WANT TO.
I've never really had a problem with cussing. I just never used those words to any extent. I would hear others use them and it seemed to portray ignorance to me.
The thing is tho, when I read these verses speaking of profanity . . .such as the one TF posted, I see more than what some folk take them to mean. And in their context I am just as guilty as the next fellow. Many words in the Bible are considered profanity today. Bridling the tongue however is mostly speaking of boasting, speaking ill of others, backbiting, false accusations, speaking just to hear yourself, dishonering God or His ways. Words are powerful, and even more powerful coming from our leaders, folks we look up to, and from folk who profess Jesus Christ.

After serving for 3 years in the Marine Corps, it has been hard at times not to cuss. I've really toned down largely due to growing up and having kids but sometimes I let one slip also. Good luck.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in English, thank a veteran.
If you're certain you know everything, there's little opportunity to learn anything.
Colossians 3:8
But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
Ephesians 4:20-31
But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, "œLeteach oneof youspeak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. 26 "œBe angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
I agree with Mac--those who throw these words around tend to sound ignorant. Think of how you would view someone in high office if he cussed like a sailor. Doesn't sound too highly intelligent does it?
As far as the "gutter language" words that aren't specifically spelled out in the Bible . . . WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? If you don't think He would allow himself to use those words, the you shouldn't either.

But how do we know those are bad words? Did humans decide that, or did God? That's what I was trying to get at. It's not like I run around going nuts and cussing, I guess maybe I phrased it wrong??

Dont know if ya'll watched the 2000 olympics or not but there was a basket ball player from Italy who last name was the "F" word with an "A" at the end.
I almost fell out of my seat when they showed him on national TV and he turned around and there for all to see was his name on the back of his shirt.

hey bud,
i've actaully talked about this before with friends and its another one of those no win situations. Some people say that the only cuss words of which the bible speaks are GD, holy ****, and any other variation of using the lord's name or holy in vain...of course, there are some that say that as time has evolved that we are thus suppose to take the bible and intepret it into today's society...however, there has to be some origin of these words, and if the orgininal origin was not meant to be a curse word, does that really mean it is "bad"?
also, I did a little research several years ago and read about one school (catholic i believe) who taught it's students that while swearing was not permissable and would not be condoned, only the aforementioned "anti-christ" swearing could be punished by eternal damnation...now of course, that is only one school's opinion, but it kinda lets you know the wide array of opinions that are out there
