It's a Romans 14 situation..in other words between you and God..After doing Greek word studies I'm persuaded the wine Jesus drank was the real deal...and the water he turned into wine was the real deal...Paul telling Timothy to drink a little wine for thine infirmities was the real deal..yet Romans 14 says "If wine maketh my brother to stumble I will no longer drink wine." Therefore' it's between you and God." In many eastern nations you woul dnot offend another Christian by drinking a glass of wine..What is condemned is drunkeness..
Jesus made it clear "It's not what goes in the mouth of man that defileth the man.,.but what comes out of a man's mouth that defiltheth him." The Lord also said."He maketh the wine to make the heart of man merry." I'd rather see a Christian drink an occational glass of wine than to have have his conscience numbed by anti depressants..

Summary..drinking is offensive in most churches of the USA..So if I had one it would be in the privacy of my own home.

1 COr. 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

You just sound like me there. I dont know if you been really drunk like stumble around, swearing, lusting after women. I have been there more then care to say. I say thats wrong. If you are sitting there maybe relaxed a bit after a few drinks then I see you are in the clear. The bible never says anything about we shouldnt drink. Dont get drunk is basically it. You may ask whats drunkness well like before for me drinking heavly casues me to do those things and thats wrong.

Fred,
from your previous post about your battle with lust{Which is quite normal fo rmen} drinkng is not a good idea. God warns in Gal. 5 that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God..and I know it doesn't take but a couple of beers to cause a person to compromise. This is why Proverbs calls it a mocker.

Mine is also an issue of offending.I talk to my students all the tim eabout Christ..I always run into school kids or teachers at the store..What will they think if they see beer in my grocery cart..Their faith in me and my message is greatly diinished..so it's also about offending. This was Paul's message about alcohol. Yet, he mentions in 1 Tim. 3 that even church leaders can have some.He instructs overseers "Not to be given to wine." that word "Given " means addicted to it..the same word farther down."Not being given to filthy lucre." Lucre is money. We need money but we are not to be addicted.

I see alcohol like a gun..My concealed weapons permit is on it's way..because I get angry at times..I plan to leave it at home and carry it only like I had planned..for archery and scouting only.

Alcohol is the same way..if you from timeto time surf the net for porn...BY ALL MEANS leave alcohol alone.

I don't think that having a beer or a glass of wine is sinful in and of itself, byut I don't drink.

Here's why . . .

Before I was saved, I used to drink with friends on weekends and the purpose was to get drunk. I never cared for beer, so I would make mixed drinks that I liked and drink just for the buzz. The Bible clearly warns us not to be filled with strong drink and there are numerous warnings about drinking to excess. Since I was drinking purely to get drunk, I was clearly wrong and I decided to quit entirely. I haven't had a drop since and I don't miss it. I never was even close to alcoholism, so quitting wasn't a problem for me. I do see the usefulness of an occasionalglass of wine and it may even benefit your health, but I don't do it.

I gave it up for my witness. I didn't want to cause someone to stumble.

It used to be necessary to drink alcohol because it wasn't safe to drink anything that didn't contain it. I'm sure Jesus drank it even as a child. Pretty much everyone did. But today, it just isn't necessary so why take the risk? I don't believe there is anything intrinsicly wrong with it when done in moderation but again in today's world there are so many choices of safe and good tasting beverages that I just can't see the point in choosing a beverage that carries with it a unique danger of addiction and ultimate destruction.
