Default Whats with the Catholic league?

I was just watching CNN, interviewing a spokes woman who was bashing Huckabee for his campaign ad centering around Christmas. At the same time, the woman was critizing him for mentioning the fact that Mormans teach that Satan and Jesus were brothers. Does the Catholic league believe that the Mormans are more christian than the baptist?

I think it's one of those protest groups that makes noise somewhat out of proportion to its size.

The media loves to focus on these people as though they speak for the majority.

They would probably be opposed to Huckabee because he comes across as a pretty much fundamentalist Christian.

I have great respect for Mr. Huckabee. I think his values and that of Catholics overlap to a tremendous degree.

I won't be old enough to vote in the primary, but if he gets the nomination, he has my vote.

I doubt if Catholic docrine favors either one over the other based on their beiefs. The 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church, the official source of Roman Catholic doctrine, proclaims:

"For it is through Christ's Catholic Church alone, which is the universal help toward salvation, that the fullness of the means of salvation can be obtained." Pg. 215, #816 (emphasis added)

""¦all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body: Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: "¦Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it." Pg. 224, #846 (emphasis added)

This is not a new Catholic doctrine. Previous catechisms have taught the same. Here is a quote from the 1949 Baltimore Catechism:

Question: "Are all obliged to belong to the Catholic Church in order to be saved?" Answer: "All are obliged to belong to the Catholic Church to be saved." (New Baltimore Catechism, No. 3, Pg. 93, #166)

Not being a Catholic, I am not familar with the differentgroups that are part of the church and those who are not. Is the Catholic league an official arm of the church? When we non catholics see one speaking out, how do we know if they represent the church, or some group of protesters using the church name to their advantage?

No the Catholic League is not an official arm of the Church. Only the bishops can speak for the Church. That doesn't mean that Catholics have to agree with the Church if it's not a matter of doctrine. For example the U.S. bishops are openly opposed to guns, but that's not a matter of doctrine so, in my opinion, they're full of it.

Remember that Catholic means Universal. The catechisms you quote do not say "Roman Catholic."

If you want to know what is necessary belief, I suggest you read the Athanasian Creed. It starts out, "In order that a man may be saved, it is necessary that he hold the Catholic faith. And that faith is this...." It then goes on to recite a faith, with whichI'm willing to bet, pretty much everyone on this forum will agree without hesitation.

Churches that use the creeds just change the word catholic to Christian which actually means the same thng.
