Default dogs 1-lions 0

Its a great day to be in the land of the living. Up at 4 am, fresh snow that stopped early in the evening would make great track finding. Temps in the teens-low 20s as I loaded an old dog and a pup into the buddies dog box with his pup. Another fellowwas already on the mountian looking for tracks, another buddie would meet us as soon as he got off work.
It was just after first light when we got a call, the other buddy had found a decent track so away we went. The dogs were turned out about 7:30 and the sound of "mountian music" rang out across the sagebrush and echoed back off the canyon walls. The cat had been traveling hard looking for a kill, and had a good head start. 12:30 we heard the dogs bark "treed". A medium sized lion (about 110#) had taken refuge on a large boulder just out of reach from the hounds. 1:30 the dogs were leashed up and told what good dogs they were and the lion was left to do what all good lions do. Nothing like a day in the field with acouple dogs and no guns,to relieve the stress of everyday life. God is good.

Cool. Did you take any pix? Would you have killed it if it were bigger? Have you ever eaten lion?

bow; If it had been a monster sized cat, or if it was killing livestock, we would have probably taken it. Otherwise, we just pursue them for the sport. If one is taken, you can never run that cat again. Females are never taken unless they are stock killers, (at least by the fellows I hunt with). Lion is very tasty and is prefered by many who have eaten it over deer, elk, or antelope. Didn't get any pictures of this one. I seldom post pictures as they become the property of the websites and are subject to show up any time and any place. Anti hunters often look for anything that they can use against hunting on the hunting sites. When Idaho hunters were fighting Prop II a few years, a proposition that would have taken most of the bear and lion hunting away from the state by law, there was a home made film clip made by a couple of local guides that ended up being used against us, and rightfully so. The hunt was illigal, the bear being shot was just a cub, the client was a true "slob" hunter that couldn't place his shot for a humane kill, and sent the wounded cub into a pack of dogs that had not been tied back from the tree and filmed the dogs killing the cub. That isn't what hound hunting is about, yet that was portrayed to the public and was a very effective tool against any hound or bear hunting. For the future of the sport of hunting, we need to guard against giving the wrong impression to those who don't know what hunting is about.

Great story Snooky!
Glad to know hound hunting is being kept alive by true
sportsmen. Hearing my great uncles coon hounds strike
a trail is one of my favorite childhood memories.

God bless,
PK
