Fire crews arrived at the house at the corner of Routes 12 and 23 in Windham around 3:00 Saturday afternoon and found the woman inside.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.
A pet in the house was also rescued.
Investigators say they do not know what sparked the fire.

That fireman in the turnout gear standing in the front is me, my father is in the yellow helmet behind me. Myself and three other firemen pulled a 55 year old woman out of the house. I know the woman very well, and sadly this is the 3rd fire in her home. Her careless son set 2 of them, and when the insurance failed to help her out (due to it being under suspicious conditions) she was forced to let the oil in her heater run out because she couldn't afford it. She was a recovered alcoholic that sadly fell off of the wagon recently due to all of her misfortunes, and was losing her license to a DWI. It is believed at this time that she had several space heaters plugged into one outlet that sparked the fire, and it quickly consumed her house. The last fire in her home claimed her attic less than 3 weeks ago. This time, the whole house is mostly gutted. She was unconscious when we pulled her out, and suffered 3rd degree burns to her head and hands. She was barely breathing and when I was bagging her, was spewing foam from her lungs. Her vitals dropped and we put her in the helicopter and sent her to Westchester, the area's best burn unit. I know that this woman is no angel, but no one deserves to die like this, so please keep her in your thoughts and prayers if you could. She has had a very rough life, which seems to only get worse. She has no family other than her son, and we're all thinking of her tonight, just figured maybe if a few more people thought about her, well... I don't know.
This is the first call in a long time that's bothered me, and I've been doing this for 6 years now. So please pray for her and the doctors and nurses that watch over her tonight.
