I know this is a non-theological question, but what happened to suits and ties in the pulpit? Am I just behind the times, and missed the new fashion statements. Am I being too picky, but rarely do I see a minister wear a tie any more. Even my mentor who I love and respect, I saw him onthe web preachingin casual attire.
Don't know about how you all feel about it, but I feel wrong standing behind a pulpit or standing to preach without one. Maybe because I wear one to work and feel unprofessional without one. Even though I am in the construction business, I wear one because of the position I have to carry...
Is is just me, or am I behind the times? NO! I don't wear a leisure suit anymore.
I've noticed this as well. It's becoming more and more the norm as far as I can tell. It never really bothered me, but I did notice. I guess the way I look at it is: John wasn't dressed as most thought he should have been....at least it was quite different from the priestly garb of the day, and yet, who had the right message?
John, to be sure. I try to focus on the message and if it's truth, I'll gladly recieve it from a man dressed in a clown's suit!

There are some who preach against wearing a tie, as it has no function except fashion. I seldom wear one as I don't want to be seen as trying to appear above the audience I am preaching to. It is hard to take on the role of a servant to the congregation, and maintain the conventional image of the "modern" pastor. Just for me personally, it doesn't apply to others.
Rev. i agree..i always wear a coat and tie when i am in church.. and i think all that stand behind the pulpit should dress as such..i have never heard a preacher preach against wearing a tie and Snooky what do you consider a modern pastor?

Well................. I think being a northerner that everybody out front should be wearing a tie. I don't always practice what I preach however.
I dislike a tie also, especially since retirement.

Personally brother it doesn't bother me at all..BUT here are some things that really bother me in a church situation. 1. Folks talking in church..period..I beleive that 1 - 2 hours should be totally for worship, preaching and prayer.. 2. Kids playing Game Boys.. 3. Unprepared Pastors using copy and paste off the internet...nothing fresh from God. 4.Manipulating the tithing or prosperity message for personal gain.
5. Giving more favor to the talented, pretty and wealthy folks and overlooking the poor and simple folks..clicks
I don't see anything wrong with wearing a tie, but try thinking along the lines GH mentioned. Was John worried about dressing up? Was he being disrespectful? Did the apostles wear a special outfit? How about Christ? On the other hand, we are told about the Saducees and Pharisees making it a point to set themselves apart from the crowd and be noticed.
Do we have anything in the Bible that says we should "dress up"? Does Godpay more attention to a man's apprearance, or his heart? As I see it, as long as you dress modestly (which, in some cases I've seen, a suit and tie is anything but modest) it makes no difference.
The worship service isn't the place for a fashion show. I find myself to be able to pay attention better when I'm dressed comfortably, rather than being distracted by uncomfortable clothing.
