If a church pastor gathered together a small group of the most prolific tithers in the church and told them, "If normal giving is maintained over the next couple years, we will be able to build our new building with classrooms, auditotium, etc. that we have been wanting for umpteen years ... can we count on your continued support in order to go through with these plans?"
Do you think that is out of line?
I know some folks don't believe in tithing at all. Fine. Just say giving. In the normal activityof giving to support the local church and its missions ... same scenario as above. Is there anything blatantly wrong with this approach? He's wouldn't be asking for more money or anything like that.

It's hard to build an orphanage or bring dinner to the homeless without some funds
that wasn't the question - the question was

it says nothing about an orphanage or feeding the hungry, does it ?
the bigger the church, the more money the church has, the less likely God is involved in it IMO
Nobody knows what tomorrow might bring--some might be in better financial shape in the next few years, some might be in worse, some might not be around at all.
A building is for convenice--no more. It bothers me to see huge buildings with all the trimmings, knowing that the money that was used for nothing but show could have been put to a much better use. I worked in construction for several years, and it's nothing for a church building to cost several million dollars.
In my opinion, start saving for it, and if the money is there and the church thinks they have to have it, then build it. That would be the last thing on the list--missionary work, helping sister congregations, etc. should all take precedence over that.

Brother, our church started in a pole barn 20yrs ago. We build every part of our churchon the property next to the barn without contractors. We as members volunteered on all espects of building and we still ( those that can anymore) do.
Of coursethe church has to have funds to operate on, but it is our (Members) prerogative to give to the Missions Fund and all the otherchurch activities we have created andaccept and approve of. These activities are not for our pleasure, they are to help and feed the needy..

My own personal self . . .I can't say what I'll be doing next week, much less next yr. If the Lord impresses my heart to frequent another church I would. I really don't worry where my tithes go as long as I feel I'm in the right church. Offerings is a different story and I generally figure offerings as the Lord lays on my heart.
I love to see a church grow and prosper in all ways but am most happy in a small church that wants to grow.

I dont think it should be planned how much a church spends, i think all a pastor should say about it is " I think yadda yadda should be built"(hopefully the yadda yadda is something that helps the church spread the gospel), i dont believe he should tell ppl how much to give
My church doesn't want to put itself in the position of being in debt, so building programs are built around what is "expected" over the coming years. No one is pressured or put on the spot in any way, but we try to figure out how much disposable income will be left for this after the other important needs are met -- missions, building maintenance, etc. Like Reb, we do a lot of the work ourselves and we aren't a huge church by any stretch, but I don't feel that anything is out of line with the above proposition.
