I have read a lot of his stuff. All of it pretty good, especially good tips from him about ways to work on outreach. For an indepth bible study I perfer an expository teacher like John MacAurther but I can't knock Rick Warren. Probably his most famous stuff is the purpose driven church ect ect. Warren is usually pretty focused on scripture along with the practicle applications. The advantage to a study like this over just expository teaching from scripture is that it will help a lot of people in the congragation relate scripture too their every day life. This might be what your pastor is going for. Don't sweat it brother, enjoy it and dig in with both hands.

My experience has been that nothing enlightens, encourages, uplifts, strenghtens, and adds faith like the plain old word of God. A wayfaring man, tho he be a fool, shall not err there in. Plus the author cannot be questioned, he sees everything perfectly, and tells it exactly as it is.

It is simply giving you methods on how to approach the scriptures with proper interpretational methods, which is always a good thing. It isn't deigned to replace the scriptures, but to enhance ones foundational understanding of what is contained in them and how to study them. I would imagine that there will be instructions given as to not neglecting the actual Word, while learning how to study it . No more no less. Many could benefit from learning proper interpretational methods.
