Default Porters Quarterly/Semi-Annual Check In!

Hello all,

I have greatly missed discussing things here with you in several months. As you know with my job, ecclesiastical duties, home life and of course HUNTING...things are really busy for me.

Summertime, the counseling and therapy lets up a tad and from time to time I can make it to the computer and check in with y'all. Thanks to several of you who have PM'd me to see if my heart was still beating.

Speaking of heart, I actually had a real scare a few weeks ago and have spent time doing all kinds of blood tests, EKG's, Treadmill tests etc. Way tooo early at age 39 for this kind of thing! So far...clean bill of health. BP 126/79 HR 62, MRI reported nothing positive. Nerve Conduction studies all ok. Strange...but I'm feeling okay.

Thanks again to all of you who got me addicted in my first year of Bowhunting. Success came at 12 yards in the timber with a G5 Montec and a nice cow elk (Of which I am enjoying my homemade elk chili in this very present moment).Chased some real nice big 4 pts with a bow in December, but those wiley ones got away. Just about took one down at about 42 yards.

I drew some great archery only areas for Mule Deer this year and was absolutely shocked to draw a MOOSE tag after only two years of putting in. Anybody want to help pack out a Big ole' meat cow in September/October? I'll send you home with the best Chili meat you'll eer have!

I puchased a new Marlin .444 for this hunt. The 7 Maggie woulddo the job, but probably in 2-3 shots. Besides, it gave me an excuse to get a new big bore levergun like I always wanted. However,I may end up using a my new (used) Matthews Swtchback bow Ipurchased in April (See what you guys did to me...it's all your fault!!!!!). Some areas will not let you shoot within a mile of a home/cabin. Therefore, the bow goes along with.

Anyways, life is VERY busy. We are expecting our third child (Yea! After nearly 18 years of marriage it is about time!). No sex determined yet, the wifey is about three months along. We moved into a new home in February and now we actually have a basement that can hold guests (Still working on it. Storage room, office and bedroom in progress...another reasonI have not had a chance to chat with you great people in some time!)

Therefore, whenever you fine folks want to come to Utah for the Big game, you have a place. And as stated before, you will have no pressure whatsoever to be "converted" by your token Mormon Bishop! Just come out and have fun and stay awhile. Enjoy the mountains and I'll even let you keep your coffee pot in the kitchen and throw your case of Bud Lite in the fridge . If you smoke, I will have to ask you to step outside. Not for religious reasons---purely for the fact that I am really allergic to cigarette smoke. I will provide you and ashtray if you'd like

I hope all finds all of you well. I'll check in as I can.

God Bless you all,

Porter

I would love to come back to Palmyra. I think I mentioned before that used to live in Jersey and NYC about 12 years agoand visited upstate often (Rochester, Palmyra and Syracuse). I really miss it there too.I had job offer in Rochester 5 years ago and was a hair away from moving back. I still keep my NY therapy license so it is still an option someday.

I have a bowhunting buddy who may try and arrange a combo moose and bear hunt in Maine late in the year.If I could, I might see about coming across the way. However, that may be a bit suspect for me not only financially, but it will be getting close to partition with the new child.

Thanks for checking in. I hope all is well. I hope the wedding/reception went well for you too.

God Bless,

Porter

Glad to hear from you again. I was wondering if you got toted off or something! Not fair that you get to go elk and moose hunting--I am limited to my whitetails and black bears in Georgia, Sc and 'bama. I really do want to get to do some elk, moose, mulie, and antelope hunting before my days are up! Well, I'll let the Lord make that happen, and I do ask Him for it--but if not, then He knows best, and I cannot complain at all about how gracious He has been to me! If I do, I'll come see ya sans the Bud Lites, coffee and cigarettes--nope, don't like 'em! If you make it to the south , let me know, and i will guide you on some bears or whitetails--no promise about the conversion part though!

Venator---Congrats to gramps! I'm glad all went well. Which hotel was it?

Manuman-I actually would love to hunt some bear. I think I mentioned that I have family in Knoxville, TN. How far are you from the Smokies? I may try and get out to see family there before too long and I could probably rent and make it down to Georgia. How much does a nonresident bear tag cost? Any idea on success rates?

We have blackies here in Utah, but the wait is a long one. I have been on theh list for a while and my buddy is going on nine years. I don't quite understand the long wait, there are more blackies in your woods, but not too much more than mine. Let me know and ....Bring on the conversion!

God Bless,

Porter

Thats a easy one.

Palmyra Inn, It is Morman owned. Small but new and clean. Nothing better in Palmyra of course. Located on route 21 close to the temple. They don't have a restaurant but the guy who caters there is about to open one in Macedon about 2 minutes from my house. The food for the shower was very good from all reports.

All you need in Georgia is a big game liscense to hunt bear. They are legal all through bow season, and then the first month of gun season, and the limit is 1. I have access to a piece of property that literally has more bear than deer(approx 700 acres). It was logged this past year, which may increase the deer , but the areas that the bear are were unaffected. You can buy a 3 day liscense, which I believe is around 75 bucks. Bow season goes from mid September to the third week in October. I actually live close to where NC and Tnn intersect with Georgia, in part of the Appalachians. I live in Ellijay--actually Talking Rock, but Talking Rock is more of a postal area thana town so I lay claim to the nearset town which is Ellijay.NC and Tn are both less than an hour away, and I believe Knoxville is about 4 hours away. The success rates I am not sure of, but I do know where the bears are on this property, so chances are good if you give it about 3 days. The best time is the first of October. I took 2 in 3 years and saw several more ---7 in one day! I have a pic of one that weighs around 450-500lbs,and Isaw a 350 lb boar there 1 dat afterI shot my last one the year before last. I didn't even hunt bear there last year.I would be pleased to host you.

Manuman---Dang, you have me licking my chops!I would love to take in a Vols game and then head down south to take in a bear hunt in October. Since I have the Moose tag for October this year it may be a bit tough. However,I may just take you up on the bear necessities next fall. I very much appreciate the hospitality and the offer. IfI was real lucky,I might get the moose early in the season in late September and then see about rolling out your way. I may be stepping on the big toe of my wife's good graces though, so I'll keep and eye on it. It has been years since I have been to Georgia, it would be good to go back.

Thanks again and let's stay in touch.

God Bless,

Porter.
