Default Buddhism and Hunting

Can anyone here talk to this? I have alot of respect for this religion but it seems to be pretty opposed to hunting.

Does anyone know what the Buddha's actual take was on hunting.

Just curious...

Thanks
Jim

I believe that traditionally Buddhism has forbidden the killing of animals. This did not however stop Bhuddists from fishing and including fish in their diets since whena fish was caught, and kept out of water, it conveniently died and did not have to be killedin preparation for eating. Since the introduction of Westernculture in the 19'th century actual practice has changed in sometraditionally Buddhist countries. In ***an for example, beef, pork and chicken are mainstays of peoples' diets and hunting of animals such as pheasant, wild boar, deer and bear is a popular recrecational activity. ***anese hunting of whales in the waters around Antarticahas long been a sore point in U.S. - ***an relations.

***an is the Buddhist country I am most familiar with, other Buddhist countries such as Thailand and Burma might be more conservative in their outlooksthan ***an and as a result stilltake a dim view of hunting and other activities that result in the death of animals.

I knew quite a few Buddhist in Viet Nam, and they loved pork. In fact they didn't shy away from many kinds of foods.

Buddhism is marketed mainly as a way of living, not a religion. In theory, it would not get in the way of one's primary faith. In practice, it doesn't really work that way. As far as hunting goes, the noble truths of buddhism seem to conflict with the taking of game, and the eating of it as well.

Buddhism is popular in ***an, but the main religion there is still Shinto. If you count capitalism, Shinto is a distant second.....

Does Shinto teach basically that anything can be a God? I do know I work for the ***anese and I heard one ask why we observed Easter he had no idea.

Shinto exists in 4(I think) types. I think all of them have some sort of allowance for making a god out of something. They have shrines just about everywhere. I know they have gods for every occasion and they believe some strange things about spirits of the forest.
