Default virtuous woman

In Proverbs 5:10-31 It talks about the virtuous woman, and I was wondering what verse 17 means. I have read it in the KJV and NKJV and was just wondering what they meant by it.

17 She girdith her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

Can anyone help me out with this one?

Thanks, that one was funny. I will never live up to that expectation, ecspecially since we don't make our own fabric anymore. I never learned anything handy from my mom but when we still lived in an apartment the lady downstairs taught me the basics of sewing, I have made a ton of stuff since then. I am one of those old fashion hearted people, I amcompletly fascinated with the stuff women used to do. I wish more of them would have stuck to it so it wasn't so hard to figure the stuff out. But we live in a society of mainly working families and people don't have the time anymore. There are a few at my church that I learn from but they have busy schedules and I have 3 kids so it makes it tough.

Don't let the 'perfectness' of her description overwhelm you. Also, remember that many of the things that she was doin aren't feasible in today's culture. The passage deals mostly with setting a standard for the attitude that a 'virtuous woman' would have, regardless of how many of these actual characteristics, talents, and duties that are described here. It really 'flies in the face' of the criticisms leveled by many modernists that say Christianity makes women subservient to men, and only good for cooking and cleaning! It should release a woman to be able to pursue outside interests, business ventures, having multiple talents and even entrepeneurship--as long as her family is kept in its priority. But, that applies for men as well!
You touched on an interesting aspect here about women of today, but one that applies to all---the lost art of many of the tasks such as sewing, arts, and crafts, etc., etc., . Men and women both have , because of our fast paced society and less emphasis on 'do it yourself', lost the abilities to do many of the creative things in the home. Mothers and grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers don't seem to have the same connectedness in our fragmented society to pass these skills along to the children and grandchildren. I think Prov 31 is, among other things , a reminder of this.

I think it is good to be somewhere in the middle.I like having the time to spend with my family instead of sweeping my floor 5 times a day. Plus the time I spend on the computer talking to ya'll. Josh and I maintain a fairly mellow lifestyle, our kids aren't in 6 afterschool things and the like, weekends are for hanging out and going bumming. Of course there are always areas that we can improve in but overall I am okay with where I am in my walk.

Thank-you, There are days where it's hard and I sometimes wonder if I make a difference- Then my husband comes home from work and tells me what the kids didn't. But to tell the truth I think it is harder for moms to work than it is to stay home. There are days where it seems my kids don't get enough from me and I am home all day I can't imagine how they would be if I was gone all day. My husband and I joke around and I say that I'll go back to school when Nikolai is in highschool and my husband can just hunt and fish all day. I would love to but it's God's decision for what's best for us.

Greg is right! about Proverbs 31:17..

Let me add that great women keep getting better. They know being exceptional takes great effort, so they prepare themselves for it. A virtuous woman is not content with her abilities, appearance, or achievements; she continually strives to improve in every area of life. She does not relax her pursuit of excellence. She takes her role seriously and intends to be the best.
The productivity of the virtuous woman is fantastic. Women faint when reading her description. But here we see her commitment to energetic effort and diligent labor. And every woman who will please God and men must commit to high energy and strength as well. Wife and mother are not comfortable and easy roles, when properly fulfilled.

I think you mean Ch. 31, v. 10-31. Some of the best stuff in the Bible.

Mine says, "She puts her back into her work and shows how strong her arms can be."

I like the first and the30th verse of this passage.

1- The truly capable woman - who can find her? She is far beyond the price of pearls. (The Hebrew literally means "strong woman.")

30- Charm is deceitful and beauty empty; the woman who fears the Lord is the one to praise.

You say that she is not content with her abilities, theappearance part also and now I have another question, I thought that it was the inside that mattered. I would no means call myself model material, and I don't want to be. Doesn't the bible say that we should be careful aboutour appearance as to not be a stumbling block for anyone? Being a woman I will share with you this, since kindergarten I had been chased by boys, (why do they even do this?) During my teenage years I was given a lot of negative attention- I didn't grow up in a church and attended public school and have heard a lot of very blunt and rudecomments, when you are young you don't realize how negative this really is but as you get older, you start to feel like a piece of meat, I wear nice clean clothes to church, basic hygiene and such, sometimes a bit of make-up but that is the extent, I do not wish to call attention to myself, I go their to worship the Lord.Anyways I'll quit going on I was just wondering what you meant.
