Years ago I made up my mind I wasnt going to go into the family business. Now things are changing that I am now starting to get a taste of what I went to school for.I dont think can sit inside all day. I like engineering but sitting inside just drives me nuts. I have know idea what I want to do. Like I said back in high school made my mind up wasnt going to milk cows ever since then dad has under stood. Now my feels are changing feel that I may want to. I was so sure I felt was making the right choice back in high school.

I use to swear that taking over the family farm was the last thing on my agenda. Every year I get older and every year it seems like a better lifestyle. Idunno. I do know that I'm getting a degree in OSH. I was a Nursing major for 3 years and decided to change! THAT can make you feel confused and without direction. Here's what I know. Commit your ways to the Lord and He'll see ya threw. When the tough questions of life get you down look at Micah 6:8 in my signature and Proverbs 16:9 "A man's hear plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps."

brother you can surely use your degree in the farming industry, good luck buddy, there are a bunch of people that do sit behind desk that can't wait till the day they can get out and do what your doing, there is no shame in a honest work, weather its with your hands or your mind, follow your heart. if you not happy doing what your doing now, there is no part of it, money, prestiege, or anything that will ever make you happy...
as i mentioned the other day, think about civil engineering, my best friends brother, owns his own firm now, and he spends 70+% outdoors and he loves his job, plus he can hunt and fish whenever and where ever he wants
good luck buddy, i'll continue to pray for you on this issue

I guess coming from an area with 20% unemployment and coal mines getting shut down more and more everyday, I didn't care if it was inside or outside. Just please give me some employment. I tried and tried to get a decent job in the mines at the more reputable mines, and in the late 80's it was tough. So I had no other choice but to go to college.
Fred, you have a good problem. You have a problem that most of my family dreams of. You have an opportunity to take over a established business, or go out and work in the Mech. Eng. field. My peoples choice is work in a hole in the ground thats only 3ft high on your hands and knees for $10/hour or go away and get an education and leave all they ever known.
Thanks guy for some of the advice and input. I swear that I felt that I was going in the right direction with engineering. I felt this is what God had planned for me. The farm lifestyle just makes me a happier person. Going into work dressed all nice working in a controled enviroment makes me feel worthless most days. I love studying engineering and find it very interesting. My passion is really in the farming industry I feel. I dont think I be happy being stuck inside all day. The only bad part of the milking cows part is long hours and hardly any vacation time if you are the only guy doing everything. Plus if I want to hunt still wont be able to as much if I were a engineer working some where.

Fred, if I had a legacy to take over like you got, I wouldn't be driving over an hour to work each day fighting with traffic, and fighting with coworkers. I would love to have your choice. I would love working a farm.
Finish what you started, believe me, one day you might change your mind. Things that seem so important now, won't later, and things that seem insignificant now, might be all you have later.
I pray today that Fred will be guided in his decision.
i know how you feel. i have a degree in history which is pretty much worthless unless u want to teach or go to grad school the rest of your life. right now i'm unemployed but before that i did landscaping, which is kind of brainless work but i enjoyed it. i also worked for the family business, an assisted living home, and hated being stuck inside all day. honestly i would love to farm for a living. i love being outdoors but i hate living on long island which is suburbia hell.
God may have wanted you to do engineering for a time, so even if you leave that field it doesn't mean you were a failure. he had you doing that work for a reason. if you say you have more of a passion for farming than perhaps that's where God is leading you. I think he gives us passions for a reason. just keep praying and seeking and you will find what he wants you to do.
