Default spirits in prison,,,

1 peter 3:19-20

Are these spirits demonic spirits or human spirits??????????

I thought they were the human spirits and Jesus preached a message of judgment in the light of His finished work on the cross to these disobedient human spirits of Noah's time. But then I saw Genesis 6:1-4 and I believe it to say there was an ungodly mingling of humans and demons

I'd like too know what you all think about this verse 1 peter 3:19-20

19 So he went and preached to the spirits in prison"”20 those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood.[f]

This my friend will have to be.. my opinion. While I was at Southeastern College avisiting evangeliest talked of a vision he had where there is a place where folks were sitting in a huge room awaiting the final judgement. He said your thoughts continually remind you of your sin .{Like a worm that never dies}He said there is like fire in the blood of your veins. It's like one big prison.
This kind of goes with the scripture...a place of waiting for those who will be judged later. I honestly forget the evangelist name but I will say this...Southeastern is very choosey in whom they select to speak. Their last speaker was Tony Dungy.

Is this where the Catholics' idea of pergatory comes from? Or are they're other scriptures as well.

I'll confess, I've never believed in pergatory but this has got me stumped.

Soilarch,
Sincepergutory is notacceptedin theprodestants' theology..maybe a better question might be,

What happens to a nonbeliever when he or she dies?
What happens to a believer when he or she dies?

I'm off to work and I'll give these questions much thought today?
God bless,
C7

You're welcome to phrase the questions however you like.

As long as we're getting our ideas across to each other I'm happy.

Not saying this is going to make me a believer in pergatory. Not at all. But I do realize that most of the ideas that Catholics get "burned" on actually do have scriptural roots. The million dollar question, like always, is whether or not their interpretation of those scriptures is accurate.

UUGHH, it just hit me....I hate all the argueing in the religious communities. COME BACK!!!! COME BACK!!!!!

A.W. Tozer (heavily paraphrased cause its waaaay to early for me to go looking up quotes)
"...argueing such things may make theologians but it will never make saints. We are not called to be theologians, we are called to be saints. Our best course of action is to lift our hands to God, and in humble reverance, say 'O' Lord, thou knowest!'"

Driving to work just now the Lord brought these verses backto mind.

1. Remeber the parable of Lazarus....although the sinner man could talk he longed for a drink of cold water for his scorching tongue..This diffently seems to be a place for sinners..

2. Remember teh confession of the theif on the cross and Jesus statement to him"Today you will b ewith me in Paradice." not a future event but TODAY.

3. And Paul "To be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord."

4. And to those luke warm Christians."Your works shall suffere loss..never the less ye shall be saved.YET BY FIRE."

Fire purifies my friends...Our God is a consuming fire..It looks to me like sinners go to a place to serously sweat and think about how they rejected Christ and for Christians their is a Haven of Rest.

Those who disobeyed--obviously it is people. The question is wherenot who. This isn't anything worth getting overly concerned about, although the implications and its inclusion in scripture warrant a look. But, it won't be found in visions, which may or may not be real or from God. Scripture is the only authoritative source--not any man's experience. Some are valid, but scripture is the only way to judge any expeience or 'vision'. Joseph Smith had a 'vision' that was a visitation from a demon spirit posing as an angel of light. Had he stood on the scripture that is in Galatians, that if any man or even an angel preach a different gospel, let him be accursed, the deception of the LDS would have never taken hold.

In the story of the rich man and Lazarus, the Bible says, in luke 16:22
22 "And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;"
then verse 23 it goes on to say,
23 "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.'
That's where the lost go when they die..It is not purgatory but a place of torment and they are there until the Great White Throne Judgement takes place and then they are cast into the lake of fire..

in 1 peter the verses mentioned refer to the lost souls who have rejected God..his preaching to them was not for their salvation but He was announcing his triumph on the cross. this was an universal judgement of God that sealed the doom of those lost souls..
If you die lost and without a Saviour, no matter whether you are Baptist, Catholic or whatever, you are going to hell and there ain't no getting out of it..

thanks to all who replied and don't be shy I would like to hear more peoples opinions on this verse,,,,1 peter3:18-20

motor ,,do you think that if the rich man also died, and was buried And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments.

would it be safe to say that Abraham's bosom is a place in heaven????

why I ask,, I believe after death you go to heaven or hell not a holding place as many of my friends do.,,but they often bring up Abraham's bosom

I believe that Abraham's bosum refers to a place called Paradise where the believers go after death..And it very well could be Heaven or a part of Heaven..remember, Jesus when on the cross with the two thieves told the one,"Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in Paradise." in Rev. 2:7 the bible says,
"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God."
So the way i see i, Paradise is where ever Jesus is, Amen and my friend, whereever it is, I will be satisfied to be there with My Lord and Saviour. Jesus Christ..
