In 1942, Singapore fell to the ***anese..Ethel Rogers Mulvaney. a Canadian working for the Red Cross, was one of the 4000 civilians imprisoned in the Changi jail..As their first Easter in prison approached, Mrs. Mulvaney asked the ***anese prison commandant if they might sing in the court yard on Easter morning.. "Why?" he asked.."Because Christ rose from the dead on Easter morning." she replied. He barked his reply;'Request denied, return to the compound." This went on for twelve times. then to her astonishment came the order, "Women prisoners may sing for 5 minutes in courtyard #1, Changi jail, at dawn on Easter morning..In the presence of one guard they sang for 5 minutes in which they praised God for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the only hope to which they could cling as a living hope in the midst of their seemingly hopeless imprisonment Silently they marched back. As she entered the passage way, the gaurd stepped up to her, reached under his shirt and drew out a tiny orchid which he placed in her hand and in a soft voice he said,"Christ did rise!" Then with an about face he was gone down the passageway..Mrs. Mulvaney, her eyes brimming with tears, knew that she and the others need never again feel forsaken in Changi jail..Christ had not only arisen but He had been recognized..When i read this i was thinking also of Paul and Silas in jail, singing and preaching and other great men of God who risked their lives and yes many gave their lives telling others about Jesus..this Easter season let us be bold and step and tell others how we serve a risen Saviour, how He died on the cross for our sins and is alive and well today in heaven with the Father and praise God He is coming again..
