Default Transporting of venison question.

I know our Lord wants us ot be good stewards of what we've taken in the field.. So here is my question / scenario

You are in an area 500 miles away where there is a BIG chance you may take more than one deer...Will your deer be ok kept in a cooler of ice until your ready to leave the camp. I would be keeping the venison in a big cooler locked up in my vehicle....or should I just be thankful for the one deer and high tail it back home??

PS and should the venison in the cooler be wrapped in plasic to keep the meat from getting all watered?

Thanks,
c7

I take over half my deer in weather over 50F. Sometimese its 80F. I keep these 2liter bottle frozen. I skin the deer and quarter it. Takes me 45 min to get the shoulders backstraps, and hinds off. I keep them in this cooler with 2-3 bottles of frozen water for 3 days to let bleed. Back off hunting.

"BIG chance you may take more than one deer"

Your not planning on going back to the petting zoo again are you chuck

It was about 70 degrees last fall when I took a buck in Iowa. I hightailed it to a gas station and bought 8 bags of ice. Pack the cavity with four or five bags and stick the rest on top of the deer, than cover with a sleeping bag or whatever will work as insulation. A few years back I had a buck in southern Ill. Another warm day. I packed him in ice than covered him with bales of hay. Drove him home in the trailer still with the hay packed around him. After three days the ice had not even melted. Works great.
BTW most states have donation programs with the venison going to food pantrys...........dabow

Chuck, you ever skun a deer using a tow rope and car? Believe me, it only takes about 30 seconds to completely skin a deer. Hack off the hind quarters, hack off the shoulders and hind quarters and you are done.

I saw a deer done that way...looks interesting to say the least.

I reckon I'd 1/4 the deer....put the 1/4sin separate trash bags.and cover with ice.
Then, I could hunt one more day..if I get blessed and get another quarter it ..drive to the convenient store and cover with ice and head on home..
Shoot..if I'm doing all this planning I may need a second cooler. What if I get a mountable head. That needs to stay cool too. If i strike out I can use the coolers for storage items..such as food etc.

i'm really getting pumped up .

Chuck , I always keep my deer in an ice chest for up to a week before butchering. I have unlimited acess to ice so I drain the cooler everyday and top off with ice again. It draws the blood out and keeps butchering from being something I have to do all in one day. Been doing it this way for over twenty years without incident.
Keeping your deer in a cooler for a few days and then driving 500 miles home with it should be a piece of cake as long as you keep it ice cold.

Big, you ever skin one using an air compressor? . . Cut a slit in the hide on a leg and then slip the air nozzle in and blow the hide up like a balloon. The hide will come off like a fur coat.
Lol, was doing one like that last yr and had just reached the stage where the hide was all ballooned up off the meat when a friend came by and thought it was the biggest fattest deer he had ever seen.
