Default Was Jesus a Pharisee

John chapter 1
24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

It appears from this scripture that Jesus at this time was a part of the Pharisees. I am interested if there is any more evidence to show this. And I appreciate others thoughts........Don

Default RE: Was Jesus a Pharisee

Jesus wasn't a Pharisee but he most closely resembled them. The Pharisee's were poor and Jesus was. But to be a Pharisee (at least a member or training member of the Sanhedrin) you had to be married. Jesus wasn't married as far as we can tell.

He had no need to be because he had the fullness of relationship with God the Father and didn't need to seek that in a wife.

However, I guess it could be pointed out that Jesus road the Pharisee's hard on their beliefs. It's easier to criticize something when you are a part of it, or know it well. Of course, being poor, Jesus dealt with the Pharisees more than the Saducees I would figure since they were mostly upper class, pro-Rome, aristocratic type people.

Jesus's teachings were pure and holy. They didn't line up with any school of Jewish thought.

Default RE: Was Jesus a Pharisee

I've never thought of Jesus as a Pharisee and always figured this passage referred to Jesus being present in the community.

I don't believe Jesus was present with the group as the next day we see ....
Joh 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
