This has been on my heart as well. Until about 1994 I had no daily prayer life. In 1994 I was forced to teach The Adjudicated Youth. They were the cream of the crop of the toughest dudes around and all high school ages. I was terrified. I read their rap sheets and I was doubly terrified. Fear was killing me .I never had a prayer life back then but I knew my New Testament pretty good... good enough to recall.." He that feareth is not made perfect in love." "For perfect love casteth out ALL fear." I said Lord.."How do I get this perfect love..for I am terrified." He instructed me to "Write down their names in your Bible and pray for them daily..you can't hate someone who you are praying for."It's impossible. For when you pray for someone you are expecting something good to happen in their life. Through prayer and expecting I devoped a powerful bond with those men. We grew to love and respect each other. After I did that job for a year I transfered to the 3rd grade. ..I still have to pray.

Sorry,,I just had to share that because I think many Christians may not even have a prayer life because of th4e lack of love.

I'm with you brother..I know the scriptures don't want us using vain repititions . So I try and have variety in my prayers. I always ask God first to Teach me how to pray..I simply wait on Him .Sometimes he leads me to just be thankful and to thank God for what he is doing in the other's lives. Sometimes I pray specific prayers. Sometimes I pray the Word ..like the Lord's Prayer or a Psalm. But..I try to be open to let God's Spirit lead me. I do wear prayer bracelets to help remind me who to pray for. I generally start with the biggest needs first...which is the Persecuted Church...and work my way down to the lesser things. I also praise God and express my love toward him.
In summary...I wait on God to lead me before I say a word.

This is something I have been working on for some time. Still don't feel its the way it should be. I basically model my prayer after the Lord's prayer.

I pray for him to forgive me for my sins first, so we can get that out of the way, then pray for those who sin against me, I praise him and thank him for all I have food and all, without stumbling blocks, I pray for those in need or ask for prayer. In the end, I usually pray to know his will and for myself, I pray for him to get me thru my day.

Sounds good Mark...all thy bases are covered. I also pray for my enemies. That is a must in order to keep out the root of bitterness.

Good reminder.

This is themostneglected one for me. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why. Its like medicine on the counter when you got the flu that you know if you take it, it will make you feel so much better, but you won't take it.

Testimonyabout enemies
Two weeks ago an older next door neighbor who visits alot knocked on our door. She says where is Lyn. I said ,"Why don't you go around back she is on her thread mll." She says that's it...I'll never come oner her and BOTHER HER AGAIN!!" Instead, she is provoking her dog to bark at all times of the night to keep us awake. Lyn says, I HATE THAT WOMEN!!

I don't preach to my wife...not good at all.But in the morning when we pray I also pray for Mary. .so that my wife won't get bitter. my wife is getting over the hurt. I don't preach to my wife but I try and make sure she doesn't get bitter. We ask God to bless and forgive Mary. She is old and probalby doesn't realize what she is doing.

You are correct Mark. It's like medicine and if you fail to take it you may get deadly sick.

Been there ..done that too..as if God was some majic lamp. I've stopped that kind of praying. Now, I try and let God lead my prayers. When I feel depressed because of sin {The only thing that gets me depressed...or my families sin} I simply go through the Lord's prayer real slow. There is a lot of meat in that prayer when ya think about every concept.

We seem to want to go to one of 2 extremes--the hurried , out the door 'catch ya on the fly 'type, or we feel that we need to spend hours on our knees going through some ritualistic, nonrelational vain repetitionwhen reality dictates that we have things to do, which I believe God understands. What I am learning is that He appreciates that we stop to give Him our undivided attention deliberately, and an undivided heart, with compassion for others, and a worshipful attitude toward Him, confessing our sin,and forgiving others so that He can forgive us--away from distractions and in a very deliberate and special manner---and that the time involved is irrelevant. If we are keeping count--we missed the point!
