Wife and I are in this Sunday class about different versions of the Bible and where and how they were written. Pretty amazing. Sounds like the newer NASB is a more accurate representation of the original Alexandian text. The KJV actually was wrote by a mixture, of Nestle-Apo(can't remember) text, but was incomplete and rest was taken by the latin versions from Rome. And we got to read an actual 1611 copy of the KJV, which is nothing like the church has today. Actually much harder to read. And even though its in English, these old English words are totallyd different than modern English in the KJV we have now.
I see alot of people in my class's with Hebrew and Greek translation books. I feel such like a dummy. These people are really taking thier study seriously to actually do thier own translations and make thier mind up for themselves. I am considering trying to start to do the same. Just seems like a overwelming task.
Big Country, you might be interested in a Bible called the "Key Word Study Bible" I believe* its NASB but it also has Strong's numbers by many of the words and in the back then has a Greek or Latin dictionary. Very neat idea, I don't have one but a couple of my buddies from back home do. They don't use them as much now though, as they say half the words they wanted to look up were apparently not considered "Key Words" lol. Still, might get you one step closer.
The true 1611 had the Apocrapha also, did it not?

Yea, the 1611 I read today had the apocrapha in the middle. Very difficult to read. Think I am going to invest in a parallel bible with like 4 translations side by side.
I've got a cheaper hardback one. It doesn't have NKJV, only NIV, NASB, KJV, and NLT. It has no study notes or chain reference thingys. So I usually lay my NIV Study Bible my NKJV and my parrelal out and just bounce back and forth when reading a certain passage. I like it that way. Just have to find a big enough area to clear on my desk
Check that site out, breif and very informative article with links about the history of the Bible becoming available in the English language. Several men have died at the hands of the Church in order to creat an English Bible. A sobering lesson on the value of the written Word.

There is some software, a elder showed me called logos, that will tell you how much % wise, a version, or verse or chapter is compared to a setable reference. I was shocked to see the NLV was like 50% different from the NASB. KJV is only like 20%. Quite interesting.
I read the NIV. I like the NIV, but one thing I don't like is bible selling is big business now. And Zonderan seems to be about selling bibles and stuff, and not about the bible. Don't like the rules about only copying 100 verses, copy rights, etc.

That's a good idea. It will allow you to see that same thing from a number of interpretations and hopefully give a clearer understanding of scripture. I have a CD called "The Online Bible." It is absolutely amazing and has an incredible number of translations, notes, commentaries and more on it. Feel free to borrow it and download it Mark. You'll be floored by the amount of info on it. I know how much CD's can contain, but this one is amazing.

For as long as I can remember, the Bible is ALWAYS the number one best selling book. I have a Zondervan NIV study Bible given to me by the man who led me to Christ. It's been the one I read in my devotions - except when I'm hunting where I use a camo NIV New Testament!

If you guys are truley intersted in studying the origins of our english Bible and the issue of wich is more acurate, I would recomend the book "Which version is the Bible" by Floyd Jones. It will shed some light on the issue and possibly change your point of view. Check it out

Actually, I can't be positive, but I believe our Elder quoted from that book, in the class. I can't be sure.
