Default ignorance of scrpiture

if one thing makes me mad...this isit for sure... I have a couple of friends, and they are Christians, and are obviously not as strong-of-faith as me i reckon. But anyhow, we got into a discussion last night about Christianity and Heaven, and I just quoted John 3:3, that basically sealed my deal, but they went on to say that they think "there is more than one way up the mountain"...I said i completely disagree and told them that the only way to Heaven is through the blood of Christ. They're good friends of mine, but the ignorance of scripture really gets me mad. One of my friends claims to bea Christian, but he says that the Bible is "invalid" or something along those lines, because it has been "translated so many times" and that it is "the word of man, so it is not perfect". He goes on to say that it is odd that we read and beleive a book thats over 2000 years old, and he says that the book "1984" could be the next Bible in 1500 years, or some book, or whatever. It really gets me mad, because when my friends say like this, it leaves me wondering how Christian they really are.

Pr 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Man usually thinks he has the answer... And that's the problems, it's mans ways, not God's ways.

true..but this is not "my answer" through "my words' This is God's stance and in his words, i didnt make it up, all im doing is quoting the Bible, i never put my own spin on it, thats the thing.

CT Hunter, speaking as one who is always trying to progress from baby food to solid meat, we ALL put our "spin on it".

As we continue to grow from studying the scriptures, our understanding of different verses grows. (We "spin it" to fit what ever level of understanding we are at.)

It sounds like you were the elder among that group. Use that fact to your advantage and drag the others along behind you in your further growth.

You have elders on this board. I have elders on this board.

We should never think more of ourselves than we should, because we might happen to be the elder in a group at that moment and the one on baby food the next.

We ALL have elders.

Study the issues you feel they were wrong on until you can present your argument in a pleasant manner. Then you will really be on the road to being a GREAT elder.

I am very glad to see you discussing scripture with your friends, I feel you are very blessed to have friends that you can discuss and grow in scriptural understandings.

In today"s secular world that is becoming much less common.

Thanks
mr-pirk

CT, you are raising a very interesting point.

It is important to know not only what you believe but why. The objections yourfreinds are raising are , unfortunately very common, and reflect just how poorly the Church is doing at equipping its people. The good news is that there are answers to these objections, andwe need to be able to supply them. The scripture itself exhorts us 'to be ready to give an answer for the reason of the hope within us', and we need to be learning everyday, not only the scripture but the evidences of its authority, inspiration, authenticity, and its accuracy. There are numerous resources available. I would suggest you go to your local Christian bookstore and ask for Josh McDowell's ,'Evidences That Demand a Verdict' and he has another second edition entitled,'More Evidences'. These are very easy to read and understand and give good answers to the common questions. There are many other ones available. D James Kennedy's 'Truth That Transforms' website has several, R C Sproul's Ligoneir Ministries is a great one, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries is another excellent choice. Many of the classic writings are also good. C S Lewis' 'Mere Christianity' is another great resource for an effective read on understanding and answering many objections. Stewart Briscoe, is a part of RZIM, and he is very good on doctrinal and apologetic issues. Apologetics is the term used to describe this type of ministry. It simply means to give a defense of what and why we believe. I hope this helps, and if you would start with Mc Dowell's book, you would be off to a very good start.--Greg
