Default Progressive Revelation Of The Name

I am really enjoying and somehow am being blessed by this progressive study that I am putting to file. It"s funny sometimes that I can be reading something from the Word of God and see something that really blesses and amazes me, and I"m like . . .[:-]WOW!!!, And I hurry to show it to the first person available . . .usually, you guys , or Liz, and the reaction is uh- huh . So, you guys won"t be letting me down if you don"t get all into this . . . .it"s just me . .freaking out over an amazing, awesome God.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We find in the Old Testament God progressively revealed more about Himself as various needs arose in the lives of people, and He used names to express this self-revelation. When Abraham needed a lamb to sacrifice, God revealed Himself asJehovah-jireh, the Lord that provides. When Israel needed deliverance, God revealed that His name Jehovah had a previous significance with respect to deliverance and salvation (Exodus 6:3-8). When Israel needed protection from disease and sickness, God revealed Himself asJehovah-rapha, the Lord that heals. When Israelneeded victory over enemies, God revealed Himself asJehovah-nissi, the Lord our banner, i.e., victory. Thus the names and titles described above all reveal important aspects about the nature of God.

However, none of them is a complete revelation of God"s nature. Many people in the OT, realized this; they desired to know more of God and expressed their desire by asking to know His name. When Jacob wrestled with the man at Peniel (a manifestation of God), he asked, "Tell me, I pray thee, thy name." God did not reveal His name but did bless him (Genesis 32:29). Manoah, the father of Samson, asked the angel of the Lord what his name was and received this reply: "Why asketh thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?" (Judges 13:18). The prophet Agur asked, "What is his name, and what is his son"s name, if thou canst tell?" (Proverbs 30:4). If he referred to God, then he was looking into the future, trying to see by what name God would reveal Himself when He would appear as the Son. Zechariah prophesied that a time would come when the Lord would be king over all the earth, and "in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one" (Zechariah 14:9).

Leaf River Mac, it is a good set of postings you are doing.

I am having to read and re-read the posts....I feel like I am playing catch-up and getting left further behind.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks

Leaf River Mac this verse:
"Why asketh thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?" (Judges 13:18),
is complemented by the verse in Revelation stating that the rider known as "Trust Worthy" and "True" also has a name that is only known to him.

Thanks
mr-pirk

Let me add an amen there Bro Pirk. Nothing watered down, no punches pulled, nothing but the truth that sets men free, and done without malice.

AS I said before..it's always good to post scripture no matter if our doctrinal views are different.[8D] Just the mention of the fiery furnace story stired my heart.
