RE: Happy "B" Day Porter
Thanks gang,
I promise it didn't snub ya. I just have not had the time to be online. Some of that is due to hunting, other ecclesiastical and other is family and work.
I really do appreciate the Birthday greetings though, that is very kind!
I have to say this Bowhunting thing is a riot! I did nearly have to change my underwear last week while hunting though. I had the .44 on my hip with the Bow in the morning and decided to leave it behind in the afternoon. BIG MISTAKE! I almost ended up as bear food!
After barely missing a huge herd of elk in the morning (a huge 6 point bustedus when the winded shifted...dang it hate the wind sometimes!!!) we decided to go back for lunch and get back at it for the afternoon /evening hunt. Well, not more than 5 minutes on the trail into the late hunt I look and about 40 yards ahead of us andI seea balck bear cub on his hinds staring at us and sniffing us out.
My first thought...oh crap...where's mama? Well mama was a few paces behind a tree and I couldn't see her until a few moments later. She came out and and gave us the stare down. I remember my nice .44 sitting back at camp and began praying while nocking an arrow.
Normally I would not be so nervous except the fact that there were tons of sheep no more than 10-15 yards to her right. I though...ok she is going to protect not only her cub, but a kill as well. This could be trouble. My buddy and I started to back up slowly, never turning our backs to her. She bluffed with a quick 5-10 pace charge and went back to her cub. We just kept backing away slowly. She finally decided we were were not worth it and scampered down the mountain with the cub in tow. We waited for a bit and then proceeded forward. Thankfully no kill. However, I believe she was waiting for the right moments for the sheep or a few of the elk calves we saw that morning. Prayer answered! No more ventures above 9,000 feet without at least the .357 or .44 on my side. Whew!
Gotta love this Elk hunting with a bow. I'm out again this weekend. Wish y'all were here.
God Bless,
Porter
