You know now-a-days lot people ask, where are all the heros gone..well here is one that i have had the privilege to hear preach many times..Hewass not only a hero in the US Army but more that that he is a hero in God's Army.. this is what Moody Adam's press says about him.
BOBBY WELCH: GOD"S FEARLESS FIGHTER
Bobby Welch is retiring from the pastorate of Daytona Beach"s First Baptist Church, to continue carrying his battle for Jesus Christ"s Kingdom "all the world."
Seldom in a life time do your meet a preacher who absolutely knows no fear. Such a man is Bobby Welch.
As a Ranger in Vietnam he charged a machine gun nest through an open field to wipe it out before the sun set.
As a President of the Southern Baptist Convention he courageously launched an attack on spiritual complacency, challenging Christians to wake up and win a million converts.
It was a miracle, this man who knew nothing of back-slapping, compromising, politicking, was elected president of his denomination out of sheer respect for his dedication to Christ.
His courage was recognized on the floor of the U.S. Senate when Senator Jeff Sessions, paid this tribute: "Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Reverend Bobby Welch, a native of Fort Payne, AL. Recently, Reverend Welch was elected President of the 16.3 million member Southern Baptist Convention. " Reverend Welch entered the Army and was sent to fight in Vietnam, where he demonstrated his bravery and commitment to our great Nation. Reverend Welch was shot by Vietnamese forces and left for dead on the battlefield. This United States paratrooper, Ranger, and Green Beret received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart in recognition of his courage and service."
Welch"s courage was tempered by great humility. He told me, "Moody I asked God to teach me how to pray. He told me the first thing I needed to do was take all my metals off the wall; He was tired of looking at them." His numerous medals and decorations for exemplary military service were retired to a box in his dark closet.
His fearless dedication continued after God called him to preach. When an angry man stormed into his office and threatened to take him outside and give him a beating, Welch calmly reminded the man he did not know anything about fair fighting, all his training was to kill people. The man quickly calmed down.
At an ordination service he told a young preacher that the men who had signed his ordination had written a pledge on the back that if he ever brought moral disgrace on the ministry they would track him down and prevent it from ever happening again.
His friendly handshake once left me agonizing on a concrete parking lot. His Ranger-style play once left his grown son semi-conscious on the floor.
Bobby Welch taught the world that you do not have to be a spineless wimp to preach the Gospel.
And he taught us there are still men like the Apostle Paul who prayed that, "That in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death (Philippians 1:20).
