At a family wedding this weekend, the preacher related a story from his home congregation that I thought would be appropriate today.
He told the story of two elderly ladies who are members where he preaches. Both were in their 80's and very close. It seems one lady had recently suffered a stroke and was confined to a hospital bed while she recovered. The other's husband had suffered a heart attack shortly afterward. When he went to visit Della, the lady who suffered the stroke,he asked her if there was anything he could do for her. Suffering grueling pain and robbed of the function of one side of her body, her immediate reply was, " I wish you could go check on Eilene. Her husband has suffered a heart attack and I'm really worried about how she's holding up. Tell her how much I've missed her." Humbled and awed by this show of love for her sister in Christ, he went the next day to see Della. It just so happened that day was her 82nd birthday. While he visited her, he asked her ," If you could do anything for your birthday what would it be?"
Without hesitation she replied," I've been so busy with my husband that I haven't been able to check on Della since just after she had her stroke. I wish I couldvisit her and see how she's doing."
He went on to compare the love these two sisters had for one another, to the love that could sustain a marriage of two people who were committed to each other as deeply as these two were. I don't know about you all, but it cheers me to know that the end of my life on this earth, won't be the end of the fellowship I enjoy with my brethren in Christ. Life can be much easier if we help bear each other's burdens.
