Smoke rises from Beirut's main airport after Thursday's airstrike BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Israeli warplanes bombed Beirut's international airport and the navy blockaded Lebanon's ports in a sharp escalation of its military campaign Thursday.[/b]
Hezbollah guerrillas fired scores of rockets from Lebanon into northern Israel in the most intense bombardment in years.
The missiles killed one woman and at least 10 others were hurt in the attack on Safed, about 13 miles (20 kilometers) from the Lebanese border, which local officials said not been hit by Hezbollah rockets since 1972. (Watch the rocket's explosion and town chaos -- 1:45)
Beirut's main airport was forced to close after Israeli fighter jets hit all three of its runways, leaving huge craters and making them unusable.
Other airfields also were attacked Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said, but details were not immediately available.
Israel said it targeted the airport in the capital's suburbs because it was used to transfer weapons and supplies to Hezbollah, the militant group that captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in raids earlier this week.
Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmed Fatfat called the airport strikes a "general act of war," saying they had nothing to do with Hezbollah but were instead an attack against the country's "economic interests," especially its tourism industry.
At least 45 people have been killed in Lebanon since the violence began Wednesday, Lebanon's health ministry said.
After the airport attack, planes began dropping leaflets warning residents of an impending attack on an area of southern Beirut where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is believed to live. (Watch the first reports on the runway bombings -- 6:00)
If that happened, Hezbollah said it would attack the northern Israeli city of Haifa, where 300,000 people live.

Israel: 'We mean business'
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday he fears a "regional war is mounting" with Israel's two ongoing military campaigns in Lebanon and in Gaza, where forces were deployed after the capture of an Israeli soldier last moth.
"This is not our interest and will not bring peace and stability to the region," Abbas said.
President Bush warned Israel to take care not to "weaken" Lebanon's government.
Bush also stressed during a visit to Germany that Syria "needs to be held to account."
Hezbollah enjoys substantial backing from Syria and Iran and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel. The group holds posts in Lebanon's government.
Israeli Security Cabinet Minister Isaac Herzog said: "We are taking strong measures so that it will be clear to the Lebanese people and government ... that we mean business."
The United Nations will send a team to the Middle East to urge both sides to use restraint, a spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Thursday.

Captives named
Israeli airstrikes were aimed at targets used by Hezbollah for storing weapons, the Israel Defense Forces said.
Warplanes also hit al-Manar television station because the station is used by Hezbollah to incite and recruit activists, the IDF said. Al-Manar continued to broadcast, a Lebanese security source said.
Israel's Cabinet authorized a "severe and harsh" response to the abduction of the two soldiers, named Thursday as Ehud Goldvasser, 31, from Nahariya, and Eldad Regev, 26, from the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Motzkin.
Hezbollah called for a prisoner exchange but, as in Gaza, Israel has rejected the call.
Hezbollah chief Nasrallah told reporters that seizing the soldiers was "our natural, only and logical right" to win freedom for Hezbollah prisoners held by Israel.
Nasrallah said the two soldiers had been taken to a place "far, far away" and that an Israeli military campaign would not win their release.
More than 70 Katyusha rockets have hit Israel in the past 24 hours, the IDF said.
Missiles hit the Jewish town of Carmiel and adjacent Arab village of Majd el-Krum in northern Israel, the army said, according to The Associated Press.
Buildings in the northern Israeli town of Nahariya also were damaged by rockets, according to CNN's John Vause in the town.

STRALSUND, Germany (CNN) -- Addressing the escalation of hostilities in the Mideast, President Bush on Thursday warned that Israel should take care not to "weaken" Lebanon's government and also stressed that Syria "needs to be held to account."[/b]
"The democracy of Lebanon is an important part of laying a foundation of peace in that region," Bush said. "We've worked very hard to get Syria out of Lebanon" through various U.N. resolutions.
"Israel has a right to defend herself," Bush said.
"The concern is that any activities by Israel to protect herself will weaken that government," he said, referring to Lebanon.
After the militant group Hezbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers this week, Israel stepped up its military campaign in Lebanon on Thursday, with warplanes bombing Beirut's international airport and its navy blockading ports.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah guerrillas fired scores of rockets from Lebanon into northern Israel in the most intense bombardment in years.
In addition, Bush said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "needs to show some leadership toward peace."
Hezbollah enjoys substantial backing from Syria and Iran and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel.
The American president made the remarks at a news conference following a one-on-one meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after arriving in her electoral district, once part of communist East Germany.
The two met ahead of this weekend's Group of Eight summit in Russia, where the looming confrontation with Iran over its nuclear program will be a top issue addressed by the industrial democracies.
Merkel said the kidnappings of Israeli soldiers -- which sparked the recent hostilities in Lebanon and also in Gaza -- "is not acceptable." But she added that "parties have to use proportionate means" in their response.
Germany has taken a leading role in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, one of a host of foreign policy flash points following Bush on his five-day journey. Others include the standoff with North Korea, the Iraq war, concerns about the course of democracy in Russia as well as renewed violence in the Middle East.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Bush administration is concerned that Israeli military operations in Lebanon could play into Hezbollah's hands by weakening the pro-U.S. Lebanese government and helping pro-Syrian forces, senior U.S. officials said Thursday.[/b]
The United States has called Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers a provocation and placed blame squarely on the group, which Washington has labeled a terrorist organization.
The Bush administration has said Iran and Syria bear ultimate responsibility for the violence with its support for the Hezbollah and for Hamas militants battling Israeli forces in Gaza. Hamas' military wing and two other militant groups claimed responsibility for capturing another Israeli soldier on June 25.
The escalation comes as world powers are pushing Iran to accept an international offer of incentives to end its nuclear program or face possible United Nations sanctions.
But as Israeli troops moved into southern Lebanon after the kidnappings, blockading ports and bombing airports, U.S. diplomats hope Israeli leaders will keep long-term regional strategy in mind.
"We are saying, 'Think before you leap. Don't overdo it. Don't respond with emotions and end up bringing the fall of this government and strengthening Hezbollah and bring about another pro-Syrian government,' " said a senior U.S. government official, speaking privately due to the sensitivity of the ongoing diplomacy.
Another senior U.S. official who asked not to be identified, said, "We are telling them to think about how these actions get to where you want to go. Not with just the release of the Israeli soldiers, which is an important short-range goal, but also the long-range goal of peace with your neighbors."
Phone calls by President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Sinora and other regional leaders have underscored the critical nature of the situation.
Hezbollah is based in Lebanon and seeks to establish a fundamentalist Muslim state. Sinora is seen as friendly to the United States and the Bush administration has urged him to disarm Hezbollah through a process of national reconciliation.
Pro-Syrian leaders and Syrian troops controlled much of Lebanon's affairs for 29 years until last year. National and international pressure prompted Damascus to withdraw its forces after a popular former Lebanese prime minister was assassinated in a car bombing that many Lebanese blamed on Syria.
Bush making calls Bush, speaking Thursday during a trip to Germany, warned that Israel should take care not to "weaken" Lebanon's government and said he would be "making calls" to other leaders about the crisis.
"The concern is that any activities by Israel to protect herself will weaken that government, or topple that government, and we've made it clear in our discussions," Bush said.
Rice spoke three times Wednesday with Sinora in addition to calling Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and twice phoning Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. Rice told Sinora that the United States understands the Lebanese government doesn't have control over Hezbollah, but Lebanon must exercise what influence it has to try to secure the soldiers' release, officials said.
A U.S. diplomatic team -- David Welch, assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs, and Deputy National Security Adviser Elliot Abrahms -- is in the region trying to mediate an end to the crisis, reaching out to U.S. allies Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to put pressure on Syria and Iran. The Egyptian foreign minister is visiting the Syrian capital Damascus.
U.N. to discuss crisis The United Nations Security Council says it will hold an "urgent meeting" on the crisis Friday, and Rice also spoke about it with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who is sending a diplomatic team to the region this week to urge all sides in the conflict to use restraint and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The United States seeks the dismantlement of Hezbollah under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559, which in 2004 called for the "disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias."
Olmert called Hezbollah's actions an "act of war" by Lebanon, but U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says the Bush administration does not hold the Lebanese government responsible, seeing Hezbollah as operating outside the government's authority.
During the past year, officials said, the United States has been urging Syria to recognize Lebanese sovereignty and has been making many attempts to support the fragile Sinora government.
The Bush administration emphasizes Israel's right to defend itself, saying Washington won't tell Israel how to conduct its military operations. "But don't confuse Hezbollah with the Sinora government, which is not responsible for the Hezbollah's actions," said a senior U.S. official who asked not to be named because he's not been authorized to speak publicly.
But unequivocal U.S. support of Israel's operations in Lebanon may send the wrong political signals in the region, officials said, leading to questions about Washington's commitment to Lebanese sovereignty.
The U.S. message to Israel, officials said, is that it should balance its short-term goal to free its captured soldiers with its long-term interests. The weakening of the Lebanese government and strengthening of Hezbollah is not something in Israel's best interest.

These are surely sad timesto witness, but how about reminding Lebanon about the 200+ Marines that were blown up in Beruit? Now they are asking us to help?

I agree Renfrow,
Here are seven solid Biblereasons why Christians should support Israel. [ol][*]Genesis 12:3 "And I will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curseth thee; and in thee shall all nations of the earth be blessed." Point: God has promised to bless the man or nation that blesses the Chosen People. History has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the nations that have blessed the Jewish people have had the blessing of God; the nations that have cursed the Jewish people have experienced the curse of God.

[*]Paul recorded in Romans 15:27 "For if the Gentiles have shared in their (the Jews) spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things."

Christians owe a debt of eternal gratitude to the Jewish people for their contributions that gave birth to the Christian faith. Jesus Christ said, "Salvation is of the Jews!" ( John 4:22) consider what the Jewish people have given to Christianity:
[blockquote] a) The Sacred Scripture
b) The Prophets
c) The Patriarchs
d) Mary, Joseph, and Jesus Christ of Nazareth
e) The Apostles

[/blockquote] [/ol][*] While some Christians try to deny the connection between Jesus of Nazareth and the Jews of the world, Jesus never denied his Jewishness. He was born Jewish, He was circumcised on the eighth day in keeping with Jewish tradition, He had his Bar Mitzvah on his 13th birthday, He kept the law of Moses, He wore the Prayer Shawl Moses commanded all Jewish men to wear, He died on a cross with an inscription over His head, "King of the Jews!"

Jesus considered the Jewish people His family. Jesus said (Matthew 25:40) "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

[*]"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee." (Psalm 122:6) the scriptural principle of prosperity is tied to blessing Israel and the city of Jerusalem.

[*] Why did Jesus Christ go to the house of Cornelius in Capernaum and heal his servant, which was ready to die? What logic did the Jewish elders use with Jesus to convince Him to come into the house of a Gentile and perform a miracle?

The logic they used is recorded in Luke 7:5; "For He loveth our nation, and He hath built us a synagogue." The message? This Gentile deserves the blessing of God because he loves our nation and has done something practical to bless the Jewish people.[*] Why did God the Father select the house of Cornelius in Caesarea (Acts Chapter 10) to be the first Gentile house in Israel to receive the Gospel? The answer is given repeatedly in Acts 10.

Acts 10:2 "a devout man, (Cornelius) and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always." Who were the people to whom Cornelius gave these alms? They were the Jews!

Again is Acts 10:4 ""¦ thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God."

Again in Acts 10:31 ""¦ and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God."
The point is made three times in the same chapter. A godly Gentile who expressed his unconditional love for the Jewish people in a practical manner was divinely selected by heaven to be the first Gentile house to receive the Gospel and the first to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

These combined Scriptures verify that PROSPERITY (Genesis 12:3 and Psalm 122:6), HEALING (Luke 7:1-5) and the OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT came first to Gentiles that blessed the Jewish people and the nation of Israel in a practical manner.

[*] We support Israel because all other nations were created by an act of men, but Israel was created by an act of God! The Royal Land Grant that was given to Abraham and his seed through Isaac and Jacob with an everlasting and unconditional covenant. (Genesis 12:1-3, 13:14-18, 15:1-21, 17:4-8, 22:15-18, 26:1-5 and Psalm 89:28-37.
[*] I may not agree with everything that our Jewish brethren say, but I do believe we are obliged to be allied with Israel and to offer our support and prayers. I firmly believe that if we as a nation turn our backs on Israel we will fall.
