you all know this story...
Luke 15:11-32(King James Version)
[/align]
11And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
26And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
29And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
32It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
How does verse 31 answer the elder sons' comments on the Fathers' never "giving"(Vs 29-30) ? The answer doesn't match the remark, in my mind. the reply wasn't about who owned what, or how much...the basis was that the Father APPERENTLY(key word)never offered a calf/threw a party for him or his pals...even after faithful sevice. No doubt he understood the Fathers' joy in seeing his brother alive...but to be rewarded for riotous living...well...I see how the eldest was seeing double-standards being applied here.
The loveless attitude of the elder brother portrays the Pharisee's clam to be self-righteousness, their doctrine of salvation by achievement, and their uncharitable attitude toward repenting sinners. Just as the elder brother had no true relationship with his father, so the Pharisees have no relationship with God.
The search of the father extends not only to the younger son, but to the elder son as well. the joyless attitude of the older brother (who typifies Jesus' critics) is portrayed by this negative jive. He cannot bring himself to say, "my brother". And to sum it all up, God will extend His mercy to whomever He will, despite the objections of those who view salvation in another way.
The Parable typifies mankind who became lost and the lost who returns to God the Father, As the verse says "the angels in heaven rejoice when a sinner repents, in other words there is a party in heaven when you accept God's salvation"
So it it was with the prodigal son, the Father Rejoice so much he threw a party for the son he thaught he lost forever, the older son typifies the angels who were Jelous of the salvation offered to mankind but not to them, the angels who are first created than us cannot have the samesalvation , because they are always with God, they see God and everything he created is for them as long as they remain by Him.
Before one can Judge if The Father is right or not ,you have to loose a son, I know I lost my youngest once for just a few hours and boy was I happy to see him come out of those woods, instead of punishing Him I took him to a restaurant and just kept hugging him, I guess if a man can love a son that way ,how much more can God Loved us.
Shalom

I have some thoughts on this particular passage. First off, as the elder son was one of two, he would have been the firstborn. Under jewish law, the firstborn was entitled to a double portion of what his father left him, not because of anything he had done, but simply because he was born first. The father's reply really confirms this.
31And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
Now, he's upset because his younger brother, is coming back after wasting what he was given and will now, as the elder brother assumes, will get some of what he (the elder son)should have been given since his father now has two sons again. The problem with this line of thinking is that, though the father is overjoyed to have his second son back, he never says he's gonna give him anything else, because on his own accord, the younger son had wasted it. Was the father going to reward him for the "riotous living"? It doesn't say, but we can infer that the elder son assumed as much and thought only of what he would lose, not the son his father had gained, or the brotherhe had regained for that matter.
I find the father's comments appropriate.

interesting... but I see the elder son as deeply wounded..as he had a right to be, due the fact that his father had NEVER threw a celebration for him. That's scripture as I read it.
now is there a lesson there about accepting what the Father withholds from you, even when you see him abundantly giving others? could be...
Rev, you need to check out verse 31. It does not"jive" with your post
Enlighten me. I did an overview, not each verse. By the way those are notes from Jack W. Hayford, B.A. T.Th., D.D., Litt.D. can I see your credentials.

I dont buy this explaination.
Quote:
31And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
The elder son is still going to recieve the benefits of being loyal to his father. Note the kindness with which the father chastises the elder son. There is no indication that the younger son will recieve anything more than the party celebrating his return. One can assume the father will extend kindness to him, but we cant be sure.
The story is meant to show the joy God feels when we come to the understanding that we are sinful and require His assistance. When we understand that to be happy and content, we need to follow Christ's example of living. At this point, we should be punished. Does God do this? No, he welcomes us home with open arms. He accepts us as we are, filthy and without means.
Of course, if you wish to contort a beautiful story of God's love into something else....please, feel free to let you mind go wild.
There is more rejoicing over the one sheep which was FOUND than over the ninty and nine which had never strayed.
Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. Everything is centered around tha salvation of the sinner. When we lose that vision, WE become the center of our focus. Everything centers around ME, MYSELF, and I.
IMO the eldest son was in this condition and because of his self centered desires, the return of the younger son and his salvation wasn't viewed as the most important event. He had no reason to be upset if his heart was right. If his heart would have been right, he would have shared the Fathers rejoicing and lead in the rejoicing himself.
Isn't this one of the major reasons the church of today is so far removed from the early church? We focus around ourselves, our wants, desires, and needs, while the world is without Christ. God forbid that a new convert should be placed in a position within our group! I have been here for years and they never asked me to teach! Never asked me to preach! Never put me on the board! If this is how I am rewarded, I will quit this church and go where I can be reconized and rewarded!! Bless God, I don't have to put up with this kind of treatment!!
Sound familar??
my question is why disect it, take the story for face value. the story is of a party for the sinner whom repent his sins. If your having a problem with salvation this would be a story to read. If you need a solution or direction to jealousy or something of the like maybe you should need to read further. Maybe another verse is what you need read to read at this point in your life.
i have been told the answers to all my problems can be found in the bible. To me that means that each story, each line would be suited for me at certain times of my life. IMO opinion your trying to get to much out of one story. What you take from this story today may be different than what you take from it a year from now. To each his own salvation and his own understanding of the words they read
