I had an interesting conversation yesterday that included this phrase "How do you know you are being led by God."
Without giving you any more details about said conversation that migh bias or cloud your response,I would be very interested to hear your comments.
So I ask, How do you really know?

As a person who has excepted Christ and believe in His word, I feel the Holy Spirit and His presence when I talk to him, Iknow he is leading me.

this is a very good question and one that i have been strugling with
i do believe that through prayer and meditation you will find god and he will lead you the way. i believe if your looking for an answer on a big issue, if you pray about it and do gods will for what is in front of you at the moment then when time comes make your decision on the big issue you will see what you need to. But i know in my case, this takes action on my own behalf, i can pray all i want but if there is no leg work than i will not see what it is that i am seeking. opposed to just praying and sheltering myself from the rest of the world. That thinking will lead me further a stray.
but this is a good question and anybody with some input id like here as well.

It's such a shame but so much of the time Christians I don't beleive are walking in God 's will. And why is that...It takes work to get into a place where we can here His voice.
But IMHO this is howI know I'm in God's will.when I am in God's will.
1. The direction always lines up with God's Word.
2. It comes with assurance and peace that is not wavering.
3. Usually comes with confirmation from another source such as
a. a sermon
b. in conversation with a friend
c. a dream
4. He speaks to us in our hearts.
John 10 :27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 5. Full of fruit.....no confusion James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
If the LORD goes before us by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead our way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give us light, we can say with a certainty we are led by God.
Other than that we can be certain when we are led by His word. If we are led by the Spirit it will line up with the Word.

Well with me the first confirmation is as with others, it lines up with the Word, and second of all the Holy Ghost warms my inner self as I am doing what I am doing.
If you think about it honestly, have you ever done anything that did not line up with the Word and felt a warm good feeling within your self? I will answer for you, no. When you are doing something that is not lining up with the Word, there is at a minimum a feeling of discomfort within or an out right guilty feeling knowing you are doing wrong.
To put it in simpler terms, if it does not feel right, do not do it.

I believe the answer to your question is an easy one as seen in the above verse. But the real test for the believer is to follow theese verses so you put yourself in a positiion to be Led by God.

That very well sums it up for me. We have the instructions ready and available to us--there's no command to follow dreams, prophets, concious, new or "divine" revelations,etc. Hebrews 1:1,2 "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;"
It reminds me of a story I've heard a few times, about a fellow caught in a flood. He was on his porch and the waters were rising. A big truck came by and offered him a ride out. He said "No, God will provide a way". The waters rose, and he sat on his second story window sill while a boat came by and offered him a way out. "No, God will provide a way." Still the waters rose, and the man wound up on the roof of his house. A helicopter came and offered him deliverance once more, and again the same reply."No, God will provide a way." A short time later the house collapsed and the man died. At the Pearly Gates the man asked the Father "I had great faith that you would save me--why didn't you???" The Father replied "I sent a truck, a boat, and a helicoptor--why didn't you accept any of them?"
The point being is that many want to see a "miracle", when the solution is much easier, much more subtle,and right in front of their face. They want to survive the firey crash, rather than avoid the wreck. They want to overcome the snakebite, rather than just avoid the snake. They want to brag of some great workbefore men, when God knows what is in their hearts.
Don't look for the Truth to come to you in a burning bush or astreak of lightening--just open the instructions and study.
