Default Serious question

I see that you folks put alot of emphasis on what bible you read and the translations.

Most people back then didn't know how to even write, and things were usually handed down by the spoken word and then after a long peroid of time were written down.Is this what happened with the bible?

Amen Charlie...our entire foundation is in God's Word. I'm typically a King James man .I just wanted to answer the first part of your qyuestion. We know that the Word was written on scrolls as there are many references of scrolls in the new and old testament.

On this topic, somebody help me out. When I was growing up, our church pastor always claimed that the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," actually originated as "thou shalt not murder." But thru time this distinction was lost in translation.

Matthew was a tax collector, evidently he was educated. Luke was a doctor and was educated. Paul was a Pharasee and highly educated in regards to Scripture. I dont think Peter, James, and John could write. Anyway, you are correct...most people could not read or write at that time in history.

In regards to bible translations, there we have another "doctrine" or "denomination" argument. Which, is really somewhat worthless to pursue. Statements like "The NIV is not the Bible" are really silly at best. You have to realize that a few people who post here are primarily interested in puffing up their own pride and making others look small. If all you read was the NASB version and it spoke to you, conveying God's desire to have you know Christ, you would be fine. Personally, I like to reference several versions which include the NASB, the NIV, and the KJV. Generally, I find they all say pretty much the same thing and that is....Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were most likely written by the Essenes during the period from about 200 B.C. to 68 C.E./A.D. The Essenes are mentioned by Josephus and in a few other sources, but not in the New testament. The Essenes were a strict Torah observant, Messianic, apocalyptic, baptist, wilderness, new covenant Jewish sect. They were led by a priest they called the "Teacher of Righteousness," who was opposed and possibly killed by the establishment priesthood in Jerusalem.

The oral tradition then written on paper was true for many of the early parts of the Bible (Old Testament) and true for some of the NT. The earliest dating Gospel we have (Mark)is from around 55-65 AD. This of course is about 25 years after the death of Jesus. John Mark seems to be the author of Mark and probably received most of the info he had by word of mouth from others. Eyewitness accounts, stories, and all that and compiled them all and wrote them all down...under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit I might add.

The books we have in the Bible written by Paul, were written around the time when all of the info in them was happening. Some of the Pauline Epistles date earlier than the Gospels. Paul wrote things down as they happened. His books were more than likely copied to other sources by written manuscripts, not by word of mouth.

Another example...the Gospel of John was probably written by John the Beloved, he was an eyewitness to almost all of Jesus's miracles, sayings, and ministry. So he probably wrote most of the things in his Gospel about Christ by recalling things he'd witnessed years earlier when he was present with Jesus in his ministry.

So I guess the answer to your question is...yes...some were probably written years later and based off of oral tradition (mainly Old Testament books) but many of them were written as the things were happening (Pauline Epistles) and a few were also by people who experienced Jesus first-hand through recollection of memomories.

The word in Hebrew used in Devarim (deuteronomy ) is rasha which loosely translate is kill but since the root of the word is rashi it implies man killing man or "murder", there is no word per say in old hebrew suchas murder, therefore the interpretation is "Thou shalt not kill man".

There's an extremely big difference between murdering someone and killing someone. Today...we'll say, "the bad man killed someone" when in fact, he murdered someone and didn't kill anybody.

Luckily for us, through examination of earlier manuscripts we can go back to the Hebrew and Gk words that we have and translate them correctly. My NASB Bible says "You shall not murder."

So in all actuality, the "translation" wasn't lost at all.

You dismiss Jewish Traditions.
All Jews were taught to read and writte at home or in the synagogues by Rabbis or their parents, tradition that still hold valid today, you will never find a jew ,that does not read and write and at times speak several languages, so your statement is incorrect.
Some like to include Jews into the majority of thhe gentile population of those days who were illiterate, but this is not traditionally correct.
