A popular view among churchgoers of Christendom is that at death people go either to heaven or to hell. But what does the Bible say about this? It states: "For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing." (Ecclesiastes 9:5, The Holy Scriptures, According to the Masoretic Text) So the dead know nothing. They are not living somewhere but are literally and completely dead. They are conscious of nothing.

Cat..IMHO and teaching Solomon was very distressed when he wrote tha tas he starts out "Vanities , vanities all is vanity. " You must interpret scripture with scripture. Sure ..Solomon said that but Jesus also said,"TODAY you will be with me in Paradise. Paul said"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" We have hope my friend.Though our bodies decay our spirit changes addresses . Many of folks on their death bed and have come back have testified to that. How did the witch bring back the spirit of Samuel if he was "Completely dead conscious of nothing" How did Jesus call back Lazarus if he was "Completely dead" And what about those folks who were walking around the day that Jesus resurrected. Yeah ...we area living soul that will spend eternity somewhere.

thank you for the IMHO. Solomon recognized what death is and that it over takes us all ,whether it be beast or if it be man we all die and thats the way it is under the present system. but for man kind that is going to change when Jesus steps in and says thats enough and brings about his new heavens and new earth .that system will remove death and all sickness. he ,Jesus , even said that those dead in union with him will come back to life .but not to the earth that we know now but to a earth that will be transformed in to a paradise.
what Jesus said was "Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise."
the paradise that Jesus was speaking of was yet in the future .and to the man to whom he said it he still a weight's in death and he will receive a resurrection and he will live in that new earth
you asked How did Jesus call back Lazarus if he was "Completely dead"?
Jesus was given the power and the authority to do all the things that he did . he even gave that power to his disciples and they did just as he Jesus did also. so if god could jive life ,i cant imagine it that hard to give it back.

Something I learned on Hunting .Net. I believe.IMHO as I was taught ..that Solomon was very distressed as he had experinced in life. However in the last chapter we get an over all summary of the conclusion from The Preacher.
Chapter 12:13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

15All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?
