While returning from a trip to Boise early yesterday morning, I was passing through that desolate stretch of stunted sagebrush and cheat grass between Mt Home and Glenns Ferry with nothing to do except listen to some good bluegrass gospel music and meditate on the Lord. I don't remember just when, or who, said it, but I seem to remember the arguement being made on this forum that Instruments in worshipare only for the pleasure of the hearers, and coupled with the lack of a positive New Testament command to use them, should not be allowed in worship. As I listened to the beautiful four part harmony, done in acappella style, I was made aware of what I think is a practice done strictly for the pleasure of the hearer, that is separating the different voices and arranging them to harmonize the voices in unision. Do we find any scriptural referance to "Daddy sing bass" and "Momma sing tenor"? Do we even find a scriptural permission to "add" the use of a hymnal, so everyone can sing from the printed, page rather than from the heart? Isn't the hymnal a tool designed to make the singing more pleasing to the hearer? Does it serve any purpose in acceptance to God? Isn't the use of a turning fork or a pitch pipe another tool that is only designed to make the singing more pleasant to the hearers, and has no bearing upon the exceptance of worship by the Lord? Can we condemn the use of one without condemning the other? If we MUST have a positive, "thou shalt" in order to use any musical instrument, don't we have to have the same scriptural requirement for four part harmony, the pitch pipe, tuning fork, the hymnal, ect.?
Are we to remain consant with the scripture, or do we just make up our own rules as to what we except or forbid?
