Many years ago a lad of 16 was obliged to leave home because his father was too poor to support him any longer. So he trudged away with all worldly possessions in a bundle dangling from his hand, resolving as he journeyed to set up in business as a soapmaker in New York.
When the country boy arrived in the big city, he found it hard to get work. Remembering the last words of his mother and also the godly advice given him by the captain of a canal boat, the youth dedicated his life to God, determining to return to his Maker an honest tithe of every dollar he earned.
So, when his first dollar came in, the young man sacredly dedicated ten cents of it to the Lord. This he continued to do. And the dollars rolled in! Soon this young man became partner in a soap business; and when his partner died a few years later, he became sole owner of the concern.
The prosperous businessman now instructed his bookkeeper to open an account with the Lord and to credit to it one tenth of all his income. The business grew miraculously. The honest proprietor now dedicated two-tenths of his earnings; and then three-tenths, four-tenths; and finally, five-tenths. It seemed as if his sales increased in exact proportion to his generosity, so that soon his brand of soap became a household word throughout the world.
The late William Colgate was this man whom God so singly prospered in return for his faithfulness to his Maker.

Amen Reb, I'm a firm believer in tithing and . . .then some. I know that the Lord blesses my finances and the things I put my hand to. Without fail my needs have always been met . . .and then some.

Man, Leaf- that's an awesome story. I'm going to try to look it up for more details. Pretty inspiring! I am a firm believer in tithing too.
While we're on the subject, I have a question that was posed to me a few weeks ago:
A guy in our church asked me about this scenario: He has tithed faithfully for a long time, and he has been blessed by God more than he could've imagined. He's not wealthy, but he has a generous heart. He has a family member that is struggling. He was wondering if it would be wrong to give his tithe (anonymously) to his family member. He said it breaks his heart to see his family member struggling when he could help the situation with one tithe.
I told him I didn't know (and that he should talk to someone more qualified to answer). I told him in my opinion every dime he has is God's, and if God is telling him to do something with it- he should. I told him just to keep praying about it and talk to the Pastor.
What is your opinion of this situation?

Mclain, I don't know if the church you attend has the offering envelopes in the pews, but we have them and they are printed with check boxesfor differentchoices you want to make above your tithes.

You will find out in the end, the Lord's outgiven you.
IMO The tithe belongs unto the Lord. Since it is his, we don't have any say in where it is to be used. Charity is our decision, we can give of our part anywhere we see fit.
Chuck, does that mean, if you buy a $10 meal for a bro. that is down on his luck, you don't tithe that Sunday?
If you go into the hospital, you have to pay the Doctor(pastor) and how does that hospital function(church)and it has to have revenue to stay open. When god is the one who guided them to save your life in the first place! You won't tithe because you spent to much on co-pays?
I'm sure you and your wife make a good salary, do you donate to the school board to keep the school going and pay all the teachers? If you give a poor child or two $10, you don't tithe that Sunday?
Are you saying that we can give it to the Poor and not tithe? Than we would not have any churches and pastors. You make a good salary as a teacher, well the pastor chose an other profession, he is entitled to his salary and we as members of the church have an obligationto keep it functionig. The tithes we give to the Lord is what keeps our obligation to HIM, to teach His Gospel.
