Default I made God change His mind...

Gen 6:6-7

6:6 And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

6:7 So the Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of thehis heart. land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.

1 Samuel 15:11
15:11regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments. And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night.

2 Samuel 24:16
24:16 And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, It is enough; now stay your hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Jonah 3:10
3:10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Joel 2:13-14

2:13 and rend your hearts and not your garments.Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

2:14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?

Last but not least...

Genesis 18:20-33
20Then the Lord said, Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know. 22So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.
23Then Abraham drew near and said, Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just? 26And the Lord said, If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake. 27Abraham answered and said, Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there. 29Again he spoke to him and said, Suppose forty are found there. He answered, For the sake of forty I will not do it. 30Then he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there. He answered, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. 31He said, Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there. He answered, For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it. 32Then he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there. He answered, For the sake of ten I will not destroy it. 33And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

-----------------------------------------------------
So the question is...if God is all-knowing and all-powerful, why do we see instances when he relents? Does God change His mind? Can we change God's mind? Did Abraham...make God change His mind?

Either...He is all-knowing and there's no way He can relent? Or Scripture that says "He relented" is wrong? Or is there another way to resolve all of this?

Thoughts, questions, comments.

Regret is not always a reflection of a mistake. Semantics sometimes become a problem, especially in translated script. God is omnipotent, and no He does not make mistakes. He knows the begining from the end. He knew he would relent before it all began. It was part of theHis plan regarding those circumstances. My take is this. He is the father of our spirits. He is invested in our "long term" happiness and our growth. What He does He does for our benefit. We are told not to lie, yet he told Abrahlam to lie and say his wife was his sister. Was He wrong? No. He created the law (all of it) and He has the big picture--both pertaining to us as individuals and the universe as a whole. As Christ taught, the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. The big point, is that God is omnipotent, and unlike all of us, knows what He is doing all the time. He knows when it is time to change a law or policy for our benefit. The law of Moses (law of sacrifice)was the standard for thousands of years, then Christ comes and says the law was fullfilled in Him. Then animal sacrifice (behavioral pentitence) was replaced by a higher law of sacrifice--that of a personal broken heart and contrite spirit (more spiritual pentitence). If you read the entire bible, the more times the better, you will pick out what appear to be some indiscrepencies. Those are our perceptions at best. Look at the whole thing in terms ofPRINCIPLES being taught, and He is exceptionally consistent over time. Big picture.

Gen.6:5-7

[5] And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
[6] And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
[7] And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

Pss.147:5
[5] Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

Very interesting Froman. Ithink God's desire is to uplift and love us and he finds no joy in chastizing or punishment.
