I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed a lot of posing on these threads. It sure seems like some of these guys are trying to be something they're not. Or looking for validation from the hunting sport or from other guys that they are "real men".

In my opinion-

Hunting isn't what defines us as men. Hunting is what I love to do, but it doesn't make me more of a man. I don't look to it to validate me. It's what's in your heart that makes you who you are.

Has anyone else ever thought this while reading through some posts? Seems like some guys are searching for validation.

What do you think?

I Don't know if they are looking for validation, as much as some are learning more about hunting. Some may be afraid to say they've just started or haven't ever hunted... I know I've learned many different things on this forum especially from those in different geographical locations..
I've enjoyed the Archery Technical forum, theres are a lot of peoplenew to archery and some old timers that don't keep up with the sport quite as much as some others.. I get a kick out of steering them in the right direction, Plus I even made friends with several in my area...

Rev- I know exactly what you're saying. I have also learned a lot on this forum. This past year was my first year bowhunting, and I learned a ton from guys on here.

What I'm saying is there are some guys who are just trying really hard to be something. I guess what I'm saying is that when a group of guys gets together, they start acting like something they're not. And I think it happens just as much on here as it does in person.

For example- There have been many posts with pictures of deer/elk/hogs that a guy has shot. He posts it just to tell the story and talk about it. Most guys say "Good Job" or "Congrats", but there are some guys who instantly say "Mine was bigger" or "You didn't work hard enough for that, it was too easy, so you're not a real hunter". I'm just saying they are trying to make themselves into something that they're not- like a professional.

I agree there are guys on here at various skill levels and experience. And they've helped me- and hopefully I've helped some of them. I'm just pointing out that some men will pose. Even online.

I think you are right, and what Rev said is true as well. I don't think he knew just where you were coming from. I have a friend, who is very inscure, and he is always trying to validate himself with exagerated claims about just about anything, including hunting. And no, I'm not talking about Abe--this time!!! JK!! On sites such as these there is the anonymity which can embolden someone to make claims about themselves that there is no way that they can be 'found out', so they project an image of themselves which reflects what they would like to think about themselves, and others to think about them as well. If you read certain people's posts , after a while , it becomes apparent by their 'shaky' logic, and or a slip here or there in their 'knowledge' that reveals where they really line up. Occassionally, it becomes apparent to everybody, but it can become an oppurtunity to demonstrate graciousness, rather than to belittle or taunt the person who's weakness becomes evident. This was taking place on another site that I used to go through. Th eboy was young, very insecure, and couldn't even spell. He asked some very telling questions, and his replies were full of nonsensical answers. The people on the site became very mean spirited and cruel even . The sad part is that this boy at first actually thought there sarcasm was funny, until he finally caught on to what they were actually doing.Another very sad thing was that the mods were just as bad or worse than the posters. I pm'ed one of them, and asked that they cut him some slack, and you would not believe the ridicule that I received in return from the mods. One of those mods ferequents this site, in the bowhunting section. If I mentioned the site, you would immediately recognize the commercial enterprise that sponsors it. I don't go to that site, neither will I purchase any of their products,or any product that bears their name, as a a result.

Posing........ a weakness in even the Apostles in a way, there was a thread yesterday that mentioned the Apostles themselves at the Last Supper discussing who was the greatest.

Does being a good hunter make one more of a man? Not in Gods eyes, and that is who we should really be concerned about the impression we make on.

I concur with your assesment though, there are posers on this sight, both on thier hunting ability, political view points, and religion. You can tell who they are by the way they post, they are experts in everything and always right. I don't know about you all, but if I was perfect in everything life would be pretty boring, there would be no challenges nor mysteries.

I think you will find posing just about everywhere you go. At work, church, social gatherings, etc., there are always those who will pretend to be something they're not. Online, that is even easier because there's very few who can call you on it . . . and then back it up. That being said, I think that this forum might be slightly more truthful and transparent than the others (note the word SLIGHTLY). Since the majority of those who frequent this forum claim to be Christian, the truth is expected -- even though some don't hold too tightly to this.

I agree, I see it in about 50% of the posts. Its a normal human instinct to yell what is good about us and keep quiet those nasty things.

Right now, I am going thru a simular thing. I have always drove a beat up truck that I dearly loved as a work truck. But after 500K miles, it had it. I loved driving that truck into a parking lot full of Engineers driving BMW, Porches, etc. It was loud, and flywheel squeached 3 out of 5 times starting but I always said this was the real me.

Well, I went out and got a grocery getter camry. It has all the bells and whistles. But wierdly enough, I am embarrassed to drive it. So I drive anothernewer truck 99 tacoma to work I have. Talked to my pastor about it, and he thinks its reverse pride. He was right. I liked driving this beat up thing making the money I do, kinda looking down on people who need a BMW to feel better about myself.

He explained, your car or motorcycle, or hunting is not what defines you.Your heart does and be thankful enough thatGod has given you the money to drive a new car.Instead of worrying about making a statement about yourself.

I know its little off topic, but I saw simularities. I think when its all said and done, God won't care what vehicle I drive, how many deer I killed, or may ask what I did with the transportation I had to serve him better, or how many of those deer did you share with someone needy.
