Default One body, many parts

1 Cor. 12:12-31

All of us that are born again make up the body of Christ. I understand that. What I don't understand, is with these scriptures right in front of us, why do so many denominations have problems with one another?

When it comes to doctrinal issues, for instance, speaking in tongues, as Paul talks about in 1 Cor. 14, why do so many traditional churches condemn it? And if they were truly "traditional", wouldn't they be more like the churchin Corinth?

Just something I struggle with sometimes. The way I see it, if the Bible says it, I believe it. Even if I don't speak in tongues. But here's another thing, Paul even says in 14:5--"I would like every one of you to speak in tongues". A lot of people say that tongues don't apply to today, is it because they fear what they don't know? Should 1 Cor. 12, 13, and 14 be omitted? That would be stupid!! But many reputable preachers that are well known say this.

Any opinions? Not just on tongues, but on the body as a whole.

Good question. IMO there are many who fail in areas where the bible is quite plain. I interprete this as a hidden belief that God will overlook their failures and save them anyway, just because they are good people. Many search long and hard to find a loop-hole in the doctrine to justify their shortcomings and in an effort to apear "right with God", begin to teach the loop-hole as doctrine and the true teaching of the scripture as an error in understanding. When confronted with the scripture, the common reply is, It isn't a matter of salvation anyway and shouldn't be a matter of contention, yet they contend with the scriptural teaching at every opportunity. Many will often even instigate the contention.

I think tongues were legitimate languages. Say I go to witness to a group of Chinese. I pray to the lord and he turns me over to their tongue. Not only to speak it but understand it. As far as uncle Benny standing up and babbeling and carrying on and another standing up and telling us what he said I think is a load of dung.

Interesting, and do you think that many preachers, especially the Benny Hinns of the world, add to thedivision? My mother speaks in tongues, I've never seen her do it, but I know how grounded she is in her faith. I don't have the gift, andhave even tried before when in deep prayer, but would lose all sincerity it seemed like when I tried. But tongues is only one issue, and seems like a major debate topic among believers. I don't want a debate over it, but wonder why gifts of the spirit causes such division.

I don't Chuck. And it isn't even discussed at my church. But, my growth is in Christ, not in my church. But I do believe in the gifts of the spirit, including tongues.

Snooky, ifI offended you forgive me. It is just my opinion. I've been wrong most of my life, if you got something on your mind say it.

Thanks for sharing Abe..And absolutely no pressure here. Was just trying to understand your question. I love you flat out the way you are. You are Assembly of God aren't you brother. Matt is here and swears to me he will go Wednesday of the church of my choice. I'm taking him to an Assembly of God where the majority of my old college professors go.
Talk to us and let's get this thread going brother.

Motown, what you said about speaking another language is true. There are many accounts of foreigners speaking the native tongue of another culture without any former training or education on the language. I believe it's just a way of Gods awesome power for witnessing.
