Fred, alot of these denonminations don't practice Lent. I've been atround and have only observed Lent in the Metodist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbytereina and Catholic. Lent is a part of Church history Fred.It is not biblical my friend.

Many of the others practice self sacrifice daily 24/7 because of this verse..

Luke9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
God does not want your beer or your whiskey Fred...He wants ALL of you 100%. He is not in the wheelin and dealin business. A cross is a symbol of death. We arew to crucify our will and seek his will.
12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
It's 24/7 .BUT..if ya wanna know what area I'm learning to give up presently..It's my mouth...gossip, complaining ,yelling.God is helping me gloriy Him in this area.
God bless you Fred,
Chuck7

I don't practice lent. I think if you're doing something wrong you should change it, not give it up for a short time. I would as God if I was doing something wrong, not my priest.

I think that's good for you.

Honestly, I abstain from alcohol. I wish everyone would, I think it's a wiser decision.

That being said, I know many people don't. Lent is just a period of fasting for Catholics. I'm not Catholic, I don't observe Lent. I do however fast.

Lent is nothing more than a glorified diet or abstinence from something if prayer is not involved.

Pray and seek God during Lent. That is if you want results and freedom from sin.

If you are doing just because everyone else is, or just to gain some temporary self control, you might as well not participate in it at all.

I would suggest trying to stay away from all the alcohol. You don't need it, and if you feel like you do need some of it, there might be a bigger problem.

Good luck, I'll be praying for you.

I heard that Mardi Gras has something to do with Lent. How can that be?
Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" in French. For those who fasted by severely restricting their diets, the
Tuesday before the Beginning of Lent was the last chance to "eat-up" until Easter. They celebrated with food
in a big way. The secular world has seized upon this day as an excuse to "party hardy" . . . much like the
commercialization of Christmas.
Is it necessary for me to celebrate Lent and Ash Wednesday?
No, not at all. You may set aside any time to reflect upon God. However, celebrating Lent and Ash Wednesday does provide a structured way to make sure that you take the time to reflect on your loving God and to assess your relationship with your Creator. And it does so at a time when millions of other Christians are doing the same.
The Season of Lent begins with the ashes that represent our sinfulness and death, but it ends with Easter,
where, through Christ, God resurrects us and makes us new creatures. We recognize our absolute dependence on God, who breathes the Spirit into us . . . so that we may come to life.

I used to drink, but gave it up when I got saved. I knew right then that, for ME, it wasn't the right thing to do because when I drank, it was mainly to get drunk. Haven't touched a drop since.

What concerns me is that you have said that you don't think you can give it up. You're a young man in college -- are you even of legal drinking age? Either way, you shouldn't be a slave to drinking at any age. If you feel that you can't stop --GET HELP! I have seen countless lives ruined by drinking and/or drugs and plenty of those thought they could stop whenever they wanted. If you know NOW that you can't, I repeat --seek immediate help!!!
