"Error never shows itself in its naked reality in order not to be discovered. On the contrary, it dresses elegantly, so that the unwary may be led to believe that it is more truthful than truth itself."
-Irenaeus of Lyon
Le 19:28
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
Many would argue however, this applies only to old testament Jews. It could also be easy to argue that as it(tattoos) is percieved today as being associated with a less Godly class of individual then as we are commanded to separate ourselves from the things of the world then we shouldn't do it. Personally, whether its a sin or not I just think its a very bad idea but I'm not about to condemn anyone who has. Myheart tells me that God isn't terribly concerned about such trivialites and is more concerned with our eternal souls.
Sylvan good points, I do not feel they are right, I wish my conviction had been stronger years back and not got one..... but I did. Thank goodness I did listen to my dad though! He told me that if I ever got one to remember that one day I would be a father and a grandfather and to not get anything that you wouldn't want your grandchildren to see.
Well I have a Taz tatoo one on my right upper arm, unless I wanted someone to know I had it they would never know it existed and it is not something I have had a problem showing my grandkids. Would I get another one? Nope.

It's amazing how little weappreciated the wisdom of our fathers when we were young. I think we all wish we'd listened a little better. I know I do. Reminds me of a little saying. I think it was Twain. You've all probably heard it but here goes anyway...
"When I was 20 my old man was the most ignorant man I'd ever met. By the time I'd turned 25 I was amazed at how much he'd learned in 5 short years."
I can't tell you how much I can relate to this. I wish he were still here. I still need lots of advice!
Sylvan funny you should metion Twains statement, my dad must have been cut from the same cloth! When I was 13 on occasion he would tell me "Martin I know exactly what you are thinking right now, you are thinking that your mother and I are the stupidest people to have ever walked the earth, (Sadly he was right) son one of these days you are going to wake up and ask yourself how in the world did they get so smart in such a short time?" Man was he right! I was lucky, I woke up when I was 18, he passed when I was 19, I am so thankful that God opened my eyes to him before he passed, because I reminded him of what he had said and told him he was right!

Tazman/Froman,
I appologize for taking this thread so far off topic but I can't help share this with Taz. My dad passed away when I was 51 so I had lot's more time than you to tell him that I appreciated him. When I was about 22 or 23 I actually wrote him a letter telling him what a great father he was and how much I loved and respected him. When he passed away and we were going through his things, I found the letter in the draw by his bed. He had kept it all those years. I'm sure you're dad appreciated you're telling him even more than you know.
I just look at them by thinking "abstain from all appearances of evil"... That was the first thing all my children did when they left home, even my daughers, I have one daughter (Charity) that is 30 years oldthat has 16 tattoos... I hate them. I told her one day she would regret them. Most of them can't be seen, but they are still there.
I must admit, when I came back from Viet Nam I got drunk and went to get atatoo of devilparachuting with M-60, with the saying "Death Before Dishonor", they were very popular durning the war. I woke up looking at my hand, then I remembered the tatoo parlor was closed... I was sure glad.
Well, I got one in 1953 and a few more in 1957 whenI went in the millitary. When I got the one in 53, I left the house for a week. My father spent 12yrs in the merchant marine and never got one. My mother told me he was heating a knife on the gas stove to burn it off of me![8D]

Good stuff gentlemen especially about your fathers. I los tmy dad four years ago and I still miss him terribly.
Like Sylvin, I found a letter that i had written my dad in his little lock box he kept under the bed, with his small collection of old coins and other things.
I took his cane when he passed and had a chance to talk to him about the Lord and tell him ehe will be going to a bette rplace and i will see him there someday.
I drove back to Montana after we buried my Dad and I'm sure people wondered who the hell that red-headed Irishman was driving down the interstata with tears running down his face.
God, I miss him:
