Jer.10:1-6
[1] Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
[2] Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
[3] For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
[4] They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
[5] They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
[6] Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

Thats one reason the J.W. do not put up a Christmas tree, but then again if we go by the law, we are not supposed to eat pork... Then your hog and exotic forum wouldn't be there. Huh?
No Reb...I believe my friend ,God is talking about making idols here.
That is my understanding .

Are they worshipping a Tree for no reason? Why do we do the same thing?

Iconoclast and iconodules had the same arguments over the idea of veneration for things and worship for things hundreds of years ago.
I myself put up a Christmas tree every year. My family has always done it as a family thing. We like to put the ornaments on that we have collected over the years. Basically, it shows us growing up.
But...do we worship the tree? No. Do we even venerate the tree (give it respect)? Not really.

Well...Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birthday. But it was put on December 25th which was originally a pagan holiday, to appeal to the pagan people. I don't necessarily agree with that method of evangelism, but I can't do anything about it now.
The Christmas tree thing probably was some pagan way of honoring or worshipping their gods. And since it was on that day, when it was made Christmas, it just made it's way on into Christianity and we (as in the Christians then) just changed it's name to a "Christmas Tree."
That's about the only explanation I have.
As a Christian person, I don't put one up to worship any gods. I just put one up because it is tradition in my family for the Christmas season.

I am all in for buring the Christmas tree. We have one that alread has lights in it. It weights 10 million pounds and is a royal pain in the knees to put it up, it's almost 10 feet tall... I hate that tree.. but the day before Thanksgiving I am in the attic getting down antique santas and other items she has found in the last 53 years on this earth or make this monster of a tree even more ornate... If it wasn't for keeping the peace in this house, I would decorate the Catus we have growing by the window. Amen!
