Default Last deer for 2005

For a number of years, I've been wanting to take a deer in every month that the season was open. What has happened though is the Lord blesses me with so many deer in October and November that I don't have any room left in my freezer for December and January deer. This year has been no different. And my youngest son took his first as well, which really had me "shoehorning" the meat in there! With today being 12/31/05, rain forecast from morning on through the evening, and no deer taken in December to date, it looked like I would not meet the goal this year either.

However, I have had two co-workers recently tell me that each of them would take a deer if I got one for them -- I have a standing offer for friends, co-workers etc. This is where my story begins . . .

My alarm went off this morning and I turned it off and listened to see if I could hear any rain hitting the skylight. Even though I heard nothing, I strongly thought about staying in my warm bed with my warm wife! I decided that I couldn't miss this last morning of 2005 since I knew the afternoon would be a wash-out.

I got showered and dressed while deciding on which stand to hunt. After getting all my gear and walking the 100 yards to my stand, I climbed up and settled in to wait. A little after 8am, I saw a group of 5 deer walking along a trail which would take them onto another part of my property, but never anywhere near close enough. I tried calling, but to no avail.

About 10 minutes later, they returned and were walking towards me. (Even though it's muzzleloader season and firearms have been the weapon of the season for the past 6 weeks, I have used exclusively my bow since I have been successful multiple times each of the last 4 years using only it.)

The biggest one (all does), was walking straight at me the only time I had a clear shot at her and the range was 40 yards so I had no choice, but to wait for her to turn. She never offered me the chance, but the 2nd biggest one decided to walk with another one along a trail 30 yards away. She was getting slightly suspicious and started to turn to go back, so I drew and waited for the shot. She took her time and finally cleared the screening branches to offer me a 30 yard shot.

I planted my 30 yard pin right behind her shoulder, touched off the release and saw the arrow smack home right where I aimed! She took off with the others.

I waited for a crash and though I might have heard it, but waited 30 minutes before talking up the trail. The trail was easy to follow blood wise, but very difficult due to the thick tangle of briar, vines, etc that she ran through. I found her laying right smack in the middle of my driveway making the tracking effort an unneeded effort!

After pulling her off the driveway for field dressing, I called my friend who said he would take her, but was at work and couldn't take her to the butcher shop before it closed. I volunteered to take her there for him and she weighed in at 110lbs dressed. And I only need to get one in January to meet my goal.

Hope ya like the stories! I know I do!

Man...it must be nice seeing all those deer. You should never complain about anything the rest of your life. You are a blessed man.

Bow question...I konw I've ask this before somewhere but just want a confirmation. When you aimed..you did not shoot low or high correct??
Just right on. What weight pull is your bow?
Thanks

Chuck-I aim dead-on. Just aim like you would if the target were out in front of you . . . and then bend at the waist. If you don't - and aim by lowering your bow arm - you'll, in efect shorten your draw length enough to send the arrow high.

We had 2 dozen in the yard and in the field earlier this week. We've never seen that many at once on my place. But I still find plenty of things to complain about!

Thanks Dave,
I know your not perfect brother. We all complain.

Now I understand why one has to bend at the waist. Thanks so much for the info.

Same thing here Reb. My driveway is a quarter mile long and I occassionally have to stop for deer. I even had a huge buck stop and charge my truck a couple years ago --I was glad I wasn't hunting here that morning!

Congrats on a good season Bro Dave. So far I've only taken two does. I've passed on a couple of young bucks. I've passed on quite a few does , as I try to pick out maiden or fallow does. Right now between the warm weather and all the hogs, I havn't been seeing too much. Still not seeing a whole lot of ruttin sign, but it's time.
I guess I'm still in the complaining phase as I still have lots o room left in the freezer.
You make me want to take up bow hunting, . .there must be something to it if a guy hunts as much as you do and exclusivley with a bow.
