I was just wondering about the thoughts in this room if we was to declare war on Iran or Syria?Damascus has never been destroyed.
The Bible in Isaiah 17, foretells that Damascus, the capital City of Syria will be a heap of ruin and be utterly destroyed in the 'Last Days'.
Welcome to the board turkey jerky, the following is just a bit of history on Damascus, Babylon destroyed Damascus since that Biblicalprophecy.

The History of Damascus The Beginning
Its first appearance in history, is as a city conquered in the 15th century BC by the Pharaoh Thutmosis III. According to the Old Testament, it was once the capital of the Aramean Kingdom in the 11th Century BC. In the 10th Century BC, it started being attacked and it was in battle with several other kingdoms including the Hebrews and Assyrians. Finally, in 732 BC, it was taken over by Tiglath Pileser II ordered by the King of Judea, Achaz. Some years after the fall of the Assyrian capital, Nineveh, the Kingdom of Damascus was destroyed by Babylon.

I have always been skeptical of "the end is near" type of predictions. People have been preaching this for 2000 years so given the record for such endeavors, if someone claims to have figured out what's in store for us in the near future, they are probably wrong. I remember my father telling me that during WW II many Christians were convinced that Hitler was the antichrist and could "prove" it from scripture. I remember during the 1968 Arab Israeli war many in our church were sure this was "it", armegeddon was at hand. I find little value in this kind of thing. I believe it has become almost an obsession with many people. Jack VanImpe has made a career out of it. In my simple way of looking at things. Whether the "end" is tomorrow or not for another 2000 years most likely the end for just about everyone here is going to come within the next 70. Statistically for me < 20 but maybe even before I complete this post. So I really don't care about biblical prophecy, whatever the interpretaion it is most likely incorrect anyway. But correct or incorrectI'll be meeting God soon anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not being critical of those who find it intellectually interesting and enjoy studying end time prophecy. I'm just not very interested myself.
Sylvan; I find prophecy to be quite interesting and have formed a few views of my own. You bring out a very good point. Prophecy can become a trap for the believer. Prophecy isn't the main theme of the scripture, salvation is. If one isn't prepared to meet God, all has been lost.
I like looking at all the views on prophecy. I've also seen many bits of hype and false claimings since I've been a Christian. And...some of these have been right in our own mainlne circles. So yes...I will check them out but as a grain of salt. Remember Y2K..LOL

Jesus" Predictions: 1) Jesus falsely prophesies DIRECTLY to the high priest (Caiphas) that he would live to see his second coming. Jesus uses the term "coming on the clouds of heaven". This clearly negates the "coming" as the resurrection but as a return to the earth on CLOUDS, not his return in human form from the dead. Matthew 26:64 & Mark 14:62. "But I tell you: From now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'" (Matthew 26:64 NAB) Then Jesus answered, "I am; and 'you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.'" (Mark 14:62 NAB) 2) Jesus mistakenly tells his followers that he will return and establish his kingdom within their lifetime. Matthew 23:36 & 24:34 Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.(Matthew 23:36 NAB)

Thank you for the welcome all.
Tazman,Damascus never ceased being a city though it was destroyed.
:: "The Oldest Continuously Inhabited City" [font="verdana, arial,ms sans serif, helvetica"]
Damascus is named 60 times in 55 verses in the King James Bible.
The first time we see it mentioned is right at the beginning in Genesis 14:15.
Later, we see the prophet Isaiah declaring; (in strong, definitive language regardless of translation)
[ol]KJV-"Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap." NKJV-"Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, And it will be a ruinous heap." NASB-"Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city. And will become a fallen ruin." NIV-"See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins." NLT-"Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins." [/ol]
Yet as irony would have it, today Damascus has a "claim to fame"
which is, that it is "the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world".
