Phylacteries
Greek: phulakteria; meaning: "defenses" or "protections"
called by modern Jews tephillin (i.e., "prayers") are mentioned only in Matt. 23:5 They consisted of strips of parchment on which were inscribed these four texts: (1.) Ex. 13:1-10; (2.) 11-16; (3.) Deut. 6:4-9; (4.) 11:18-21, and which were enclosed in a square leather case, on one side of which was inscribed the Hebrew letter shin, to which the rabbis attached some significance. This case was fastened by certain straps to the forehead just between the eyes. The "making broad the phylacteries" refers to the enlarging of the case so as to make it conspicuous. (See FRONTLETS.)
Another form of the phylactery consisted of two rolls of parchment, on which the same texts were written, enclosed in a case of black calfskin. This was worn on the left arm near the elbow, to which it was bound by a thong. It was called the "Tephillah on the arm."

I'll try Bro.Mac..
Here Jesus is talking about the scribes and pharisees when He says,"But all their works they do for to be seen by men.'remember Paul said,'Whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inherutence for ye serve the Lord Christ." Col.3:23-24..KJV.
someone once said and i hope i quote it right,"Character is what we are when we are alone, unseen by others." later in the chapter Jesus tells us what these men were like when they were not out in the public..you can see they certainly lacked character..they were men pleasers, looking for the praise of men and not for the will of God..isn't it sad that a lot of todays churchs are filled with men pleasers, preachers that are preaching another gospel and false teachers that are leading people straight to hell..God help us to get back to ,"Thus saith the Lord."Amen!
"They make broad their phylacteries."
a phylactery is a small box that has 4 compartments and in each one is one of the following scriptures,
Exodus 13:2-10---To remind the Israelites how God led them out of Egypt
Exodus 13:11-16---To remind of how God slew the first born
Deut. 6:4-9--- Reminding them to love God above all things
Deut. 11:13-21---A warning against disobeying God.
"And enlarge the borders of their garments."
the jews were tild to put fringes on the hems of their garments showing others that they were God's own people and to remind them to obey the commandments of God..so the scribes and pharisees made their fringes wider indicating that they were more religious than others..butthey weren't as they were hypocritical and deceitful..boy don't we see a lot of that today..they had no idea of the divine nature of God.
maybe someone else can explain it better than that but that's the best i can do..
you're a good man Bro. Mac, God Bless you and yours and may you have a wonderful and Merry Chrismas at your home..

"There's room at the cross for you."
[5] But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
[6] And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
[7] And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
Bro.Mac, your subject in the New Post section says Matt.23:25.

"Character is what we are when we are alone, unseen by others."
I like that, and it's so true. It's when a man is alone or in a place and surroundings where he is not accountable to his peers/brothers/neighbors, that his true charactor is revealed. Fear of the Lord alone is the beginning real charactor.

[5] And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[6] But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
[7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
