[/i]Psalm 51:4 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.
and now, this one:
1 Corinthians 6:18 18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.
I know that there is no contradiction in God's Word. However, I'm trying to understand how both of these can co-exist.

What I see though is David saying that his sin with Bathsheba (a sexual sin), was a sin against God --and God ONLY. That's what it says. Then in I Cor 6, Paul writes that sexual sin is the only sin that causes you to sin against your own body - not just God and ONLY Him. That confuses me.
I'm NOT attempting to be argumentative here. Nor am I saying that there is a contradiction in the Bible, because I know there are none -- just a lack of understanding on my part. I hope this stimulates some discussion though.

David no doubt wrote this Psalm after his sin with Bathsheba..He did not say anything about the great wrong he did against Bathsbeba and Uriah but I believe David had learned what the great saints of God have always known that regardless of who is affected by our sin, God isthe ultimate target.
Paul is warning the people of corinth. that they must flee from fornication as the lust of the flesh is a powerful enemy, even to the christian..Every other sin is "witout the body" fornication is a sin against the body and there is no other sin that will destroy a man's personality and his character as quick as fornication..

motor--I always know I can get an intelligent and informed post from you when you respond.
I understand that God is the ultimate target of our sin, like you said. What still is confuses me is the emphasis onGOD and ONLY GOD in Psalm 51? It's the ONLY GOD part that's causing me this confusion.

May be we should start at the beginning. What is sin? Is it not an act of disobedience to the expressed will of God, or a neglecting of that will? There is an eternal reward for unforgiven sin that one will receive after this life has passed, and there are things that one will reap while still upon the earth as a result of his sinful actions. Some sins catch up with us in the hereafter, while others (sins against our our bodies) bring a scar and a reproach that we carry for the rest of our lives.
I have a comment on this, but I have to head out for the weekend. I'll see what I can do to pick it up on Monday. Until then---
God Bless,
Porter.

Psalm 51:4 is Old Testament.
Wich is under the Law
1 Corinthians 6:18 is New Testament
Wich is under Grace
Quote:
Could it be that in this Psalm, the author is affirming God's sovereignty? That is, he is saying that there is no other god to sin against?
David didn't have the New Testament to read like we do.
David was in a cave and almost the whole world was after him.
And he was in great pain for his sins.
And was making an attempt to reconect back to GOD
And this was his way of apealing to GOD

THere are sins which are directly against God, then there are sins that can be committed by man against himself or neighbor, and since we are created in the immage of God the sin is also against God.
Was That Clear ?

Alex--that is my point. BOTH of these verses apply to sexual sin, and yet one time it is against God only and then we are told that sexual sin is different than the others because it is ALSO aginst your own body.
