Default John the Babtist

John 1:29-36
29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away F4 the sin of the world. 30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. 32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. 35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! Matthew 11:1-6
1819And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. 2021Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 2223And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? 2425Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 2627The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 2829And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. I find these verses very intresting. We know John's purpose in life was to teach the people of the coming Messiah. And as foretold when he saw the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus when he babtized him, he knew Jesus was the Son of God. But later when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah or was their another to come. Probably John feeling in great danger in prison was thinking like alot of the people that Jesus should be getting the people together and throwing the romans out of Israel. When Jesus sent back his answer John never questioned it or made a plea for Jesus to rescue him. I guess what I learned from this is God might not reveal as much to us as we would like to know but in faith he will give us what we need.

Back in John the Baptists day, there was a common belief that there would be 2 different Messiahs. One that would come as the suffering servant, and the other would be the conquering King. That was their interpretation, not knowing that there would be 1 Messiah that would make 2 appearances. This si what , I believe John was asking. He ahd no ambivalence that Jesus was who he had proclaimed Him to be, just was seeking clarification on whether they were to look for another that would come later to subdue and to establish His rule. Today we ahve a lot of differnt interpretations as to the events concerning Christ's return, and when it actually happens, I think we will find that our interpretations may not be as accurate then as we are thinking now.We know the times and the seasons, but the specifics are still unfolding, and will only be perfectly clear then. It is for us to be ready, reagrdless of our views of teh last days--that is as clrear as it can be.

A very good reply Manuman, I have thought that was also the very reason Jesus was rejected by the general population. I think the people were all looking for the Warror Messiah.

Thanks

Watch it guys!! If you are not careful, you will be declaring that the Father also became the son. One God inthree manifestations? How many hats can God wear and still be the one true God?

Right ON Manuman.
Oral Jewish Tradition( The Midrash)teaches there are 2 messiahs.

Masshiach Ben Yosef- Messiah son of Joseph, he would be a gentle and caring man and will be killed for his belief.

Masshiach ben Davi- Messiah son of David, he would establish the Kingdom of Israel and defeat the oppressors of Israel and His Kingdom will have no end.

John Wanted to Know which one he was.

Shalom
