So I'm sitting in class today and some guys start talking about the next "Pike Fight" (Here at the university the Pi Kappa Epsilons traditionally hold 2 or 3 organized street fights each year). I got to thinking about it...and wondered if their are biblical references to recreational fighting? I know streetfighting can turn real ugly real fast...but we don't usually (at least I don't) look down on boxing as a sport. Where's the line between boxing and street fighting..or some of these newer sports like UFC? Obviously when things are personal the "if you have hate in your heart" comes to into play. Just wondering if its wrong to "fight" as a sport? And where does our beloved football or european's rugby fit into all of this?

Soil Arch there aren't any verses that quickly jump to the fore-front of my mind concerning a boxing match.
That being said, I have to preface the statement withthat, there are a number of verses dealing with our feelings toward and treatment ofour fellow man.
Boxing-Fight matchs that are set tothe tone of "I am going to kill that guy" are wrong.
Olympic boxing matchs are an example of fighting with the intent of showings skills. The UFC matchs are sometimes thing. Although the latter is rarely primarily promoted as such.
How the latter is promoted is what makes it wrong.
To me, to NOT go beyond what the bible states means that, fighting/boxing matchs are not wrong in and ofthemselves, but the manner in which they are often promoted makes them such.
Thanks
Mr-Pirk

Yep, that sound like fun, grown men flogging the day lights out of each other...I get reb first... just make sure you bring along plenty of Ben Gay or Deep Heat. The place will smell like a nursing home explosion!
To be serious, the older I get the more wong it feels. I spent many years in the martial arts area, both of my boys have been training for the UFC and are really good fighters. Last night I watched boxing on tv and started feeling a little guilty about it.. I don't think Jesus would condone this at all. After all we are suposed to reflect love, and how is beating the dickens out of someone showing love... I know, then where do we draw the line, on foot balls, rugbyetc? ... I don't know.. Just my thoughs. Bob <><
There's nothing wrong with sport fighting. Watch how the fighters, whether it's boxing, UFC, kickboxing, etc., treat each other after the fight. They hug, smile, congradulate each other. They are just two warriors showing their skills. Remember how sport fighting got it's start. A way for two oposing sides to settle a dispute without massive loss of life. An honorable way to say the least.
Now, fighting in the street just to feel like more of a man? Hard to defend. How much drinking goes on at these things? Usually, the amount of alcohol consumed directly relates to how frivolous an activity is. Except maybe weddings.

IMHO fighting for entertainment purposes is an appeal to our baser instincts. In a sense, not unlike pornography. I don't think it has a place in a civilized society. Can you imagine Christ at a boxing match screaming HIT HIM, HIT HIM, LEFT HOOK LEFT HOOK!
Yep Gallo, I've seen how Mike Tyson treated his opponents. Are you talking before he bit off a piece of the ear or after? You will have to use a better anology than that. I fought and was a Christian, but when I was fighting I was trying to beat my opponent into obvilion. I agree with Sylvan, I don't think Jesus would condone this. It's really hard to think of Jesus sitting on the bleachers yelling kick him, choke him out, knock him out.. I think eveyone must deal with that one on their own level. I know I still watch boxing and UFC, but I am starting to feel guilty about it... Maybe the Holy Spirit is trying to steer me into doing something more productive with my time. Again, that just my own opinion. Bob <><
