Default The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis

The movie is coming out this Friday, I suggust everyone go see it. This book is all about mankind's need for a Savior! It is a masterpiece! The kids will really love it! I'll give you a run down of the characters and their relationship to the Gospel.

"Aslan" the Lion represents Jesus! He is awesome and fierce! At one point in the book, Susan, one of the children askes, "Is Aslan safe?" She is answered, "No He is not safe, but He IS good!" The respect/fear everyone has of Aslan is a good way to see us in the presence of Jesus.

The "White Witch"represents Satan. She temps with evil and actually succeeds in tricking one of the children, "Edmond". She uses a candy called "Turkish Delight" and it is what represents "Sin". She has lots of evil helpers and is quiteevil.

The Children are all important to the story, but one inparticular represents us, mankind and our sinful desires. "Edmond" falls to the witch and brings terrible consequences on the whole group of the "good guys". Aslanchoses topay for Edmond's sin. Which is the climax of the whole story.

"Peter" reresents the best in mankind, the good attitudesand the faith we can develop in time.

"Susan" is the conscience of the group. The inner voice of reason.

"Lucy" is the innocent child we all were, and still long to be. As Jesus said, "unless you become as one of these little children you will by no means enterheaven." She is precious. And she trusts unconditionally.

The family and their friends learn to forgive Edmond and overcome evil together. It is a great book, and I'm sure the movie will not disappoint.

I'd encourage you to talk to your children or grandchildren before taking them to the movie. Let them know to look for the comparison from the story to the Gospel! They can see it, even if we some times can't!

That's my take on the story hope you all get to see it!

CS Lewis is only the most influential apologist in the 20th century--his cotributions are prieless. His books are great works--blessings from the Lord for the Church. Goose--I found out the other day that Aslan is the Aramaic word for --lion!

This is the first movie I've actually been anxious for in...well...its probably the first. It's the first movie I've actually thought about waiting in line for the opening night. It's timed perfect for some pre-finals stress relief

Obviously this series of books come with recommendations...but The Great Divorce is PHENOMINAL! Short, easy, and can be read 3-4 times in the same week w/o getting boring. It's about a visit to heaven, and all the "hosts" explain some reasons as to why people refuse the gospel. It's written in the same parallel-symbolism that the Narnia books are. My highest recommendations!

I was wondering which of his books I would read next! I'll get that one! Thanks Soilarch.

Deerhunter, I also remember a program on PBS I know I watched it sometime in my childhood, and I remember being very into it, but I don't remember much more than that. It must have been around 1979-1980 in my memory. Cause we lived in a certain house and that's where I remember watching it.

I am really looking forward to the movie!

My wife had a copy of The Screwtape Letters from the library. I only got to read a few chapters, but Lewis was clearly a gifted and imaginitive writer.

You know when I saw the previews, I figured it was another harry potter crap poisoning our childrens minds with hocus pocus. Never thought of it as Godly. Still not sure how I would feel about it, if I have to dress it up.

Sounds interesting however.

"The Screwtape Letters" is an excellent book! I have about 3 copies still that I have read in times past and I've given away at least 9 or 10 copies to friends! We just really need to read these kind of books.

In my opinion the "new" C.S. Lewis is a guy named Andy Andrews. He has written a few books but the best was his first. "The Traveler's Gift" it is a very fun read and full of suprizes! It is also filled with encouragement and hope for our lives and the decisions we make! If you read it, youwill be edified! I read it a few years ago during my hunts on the stand. I was just as excited to get into the stand to read as I was to hunt!!!! He has also written, "The Lost Choice" and "Island of Saints". Every book has one main biblical theme, but teaches truthwithout the reader even realizing he is learning biblical principles. They are history lessons and Bible lessons in one.

Bigcountry, I share your concern about watering-down or dressing up the gospel. I think modern evangalism has taken a wrong turn...but that's a new thread. Jesus used parables to explain "kingdom things" to his listeners. The not much spirituality in buying a field, or making a financial investment or filling your oil lamps...but you know where this is going. If you'll try to think of these things in that light it may help.
