My wife brought something to my attention that I was not aware of. In all of the nativity scenes at Christmas time you see the 3 wise men at the manger. Take a better look at Matthew 2. The wise men actually visited Jesus in his home which scholars have guessed to be when Jesus was 1 or 2 years old. Thought I would share

Luke2:15
[15] And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Matt.2:11
[11] And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

It has generally been assumed that the wise men (or magi) were three in number because Matthew 2:11 makes mention of three gifts: " . . . they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh." The number of wise men is not specified in the Bible, however, and some Eastern religions have claimed up to twelve of them made the journey to Bethlehem. The names of the wise men, Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, do not come from the Bible and did not appear in Christian literature until over five hundred years after the birth of Jesus. Nothing in the Bible says the wise men rode camels (or any other animal); they may have made their journey from the east on foot for all we know. And despite the familiar lyrics of the Christmas carol "We Three Kings," no biblical source depicts the three wise men as kings. (They were most likely learned men, perhaps astrologers.)

Actually that's pretty interesting - I never realized that. I always thought the nativity scenes were portraying what happened when Christ was born. So technically, our tradition of gift giving on Christs birthday is inaccurate. We give gifts because of the wise men giving gifts, right?? But if they weren't there when he was born, that is ..... hmmmm, my gears are turning ever so slow. I see research in my near future! If you or anyone wants to jump in, come on in!!
Reb-- this might make you the Grinch brother!! Christmas is about to change!!!!

I'm just joking with you Reb--

my question is, where did the gift giving ritual come from? If it comes from the wise men bringing gifts to Jesus as a toddler at his home, then our timing is all wrong.[] I had always assumed there were 3 wise men and they were there when Christ was still in the manger at the stable in Bethlehem.
