From a like in Off Season" in the "read this" thread, I found this:
Quote:
Some biblical scholars believe that Aramaic (the language of the ancient Bible) did not contain an easy way to say "many things" and used a term which has come down to us as 40. This means that when the bible - in many places - refers to "40 days," they meant many days.

I believe the entire Bible to be the Word of God as it is written. I believe that the King James is also the best translation on the market. I read others during my studies..but if I had one it would be my King James.
I would be highly skeptical of this. People have been counting far past 40 for a long long time. Genesis refers to peoples ages in the hundreds of years if I'm not mistaken. I'm no expert on such things but like I said I'm highly skeptical that the Aramaic language didn't have a way to express such a small number.
I speak three languages fluently and have found in some languages there are words not found in the engllish language and vise versa, howeverthe Bibledoes not take away from the fact of it's authenticity or similar replication of the original text. During the time of the Bible being cannonized the Holy Spirit gathered together all we needed to achieve Gods plan and purpose in this life. You can argue about it's correctness of every word and we can discuss may aspects of the Bible, but only one verse we all need to heed and cannot argue about is John 3: 16. By the way, english is my second language. Bob <><
I personaly do not believe the bible word for word. rather i believe that God set down his chosen ones to write acounts and stories to help guide us in our life. If god wanted us to fallow blindly he would not have givin us free will and the intelect to use it. I say believe what you want to about the bible but believe that there was a man who was the son of god and he was sacrificed for us by his father. beyond that nothing else realy matters. decide for yourself what is fact and what is meant to guide.

It could be possible that when the bible mentions 40 days it could be 38 days or 41 days. I don't think that the details matter so much as the message learned. Every verse in the good book is meant to show us how to live, its not meant to test our skills in math.

Not being combative here--and I appreciate what you are saying--but the standard that we live by is exactly that. To leave it up to the indiviual to decide for himself is opening up for the exact opposite--- no standard. There are 6.5 billion people alive today, and just as many opinions. How can you ever determine who's right and wrong without a standard to go by? There is a major league difference in being subjective(relying on one's own personal opinion) and being objective(relying on an outside source--an object--for determining what is true) God has spoken and we listen, getting our instructions for life, faith, and the practical, as well as the spiritual from His wisdom--He becoming the object of our faith. Do a study on the process of canonization, and see just how accurate the Scriptures truly are. They have withstood more critics and attacks, without EVER having been disreputed over any point of seeming contradiction or error. There are a multiplicity of bases for the examination, and consequent validation of the Scriptures--archaelogical, historical, grammatical, higher criticism, fulfilled prophecies, etc. that all point to the accuracy, reliability, and , authority of them.As a matter of fact, the resurrection is one of the most established historical facts ever recorded. Look at a book called The Case For The Creator, by Lee Strobel. He is a law professor that became a believer in his class asked him to put his money where his mouth was, and to do a case study on the historicity of the resurrection, as he would put together a court case. He did, fully expecting to discount it--and became a believer in the process, after discovering the proofs. There are many others similar--like the book by N T Wright, The Resurection of the Son of God that the author Anne Rice(An Interview With a Vampire--which also became a movie) read, and convinced a once skeptic, married to an atheist of its accuracy. These are just a couple of samples.
Well written post Manuman . .I agree. Some things are worth being combative over tho,but maybe not necessary. I keep hearing of Lee Strobels "A Case For A Creator", I guess I'll have to get it. I do agree that each individual has an opinion, and by our thinking, each individual has a right to have it, but there is a standard which is the word of God. I don't believe that the word was meant to accomodate whatever we want to make out of it. Your right that the bible has withstood the test of the ages, and against many highly intelligent people and forces. . . .if a man doesn't believe in it, I am always curious as to what he bases his disbelief on. Usually I always find that folk that don't believe in the bible . .while many may have foundsupposed contradictions, usually it's because of not understanding or the fact that they really hope that it's not true. I fully believe that if a sinner readsw thru . .at least the NT, that the Spirit will witness toand convict that individual . . .how they react to that is manifest in diverse ways.
